I look at her. “I am alone. They made that choice when it was their way or the highway. No cozy little dinner is going to fix that.” I try to stay calm, but this attempt to smooth things over is eating me alive.

Nora takes a sip of her drink. “Andie, I’m sorry. I was just trying to help Gem. We both just want to see you happy.”

I inhale and let it out. “Do you know how long I tried to make them happy? Even when I did what they wanted, it wasn’t enough.”

“I know. Is it bad to hope this time it might be different? At least Sean will be there.” She peeks at me from under her eyelashes. I toss my straw wrapper at her, and she tries to dodge it like it’s a rock.

“There’s always hope,” I grumble. “But I think that hope should be placed in me not punching someone before the night ends.”

Nora laughs. “Man, I really wish I was going to be there. I’d like to see Sean hold his woman back.”

I groan. “His woman?”

“Yes, don’t even try to tell me you aren’t digging him. He’s been over every night this week. You’ll miss him when he’s cleared to play again.”

I don’t want to think about it because the truth is, I will miss him. “Yeah, well, he’ll probably attend this party and decide his drama is nothing compared to mine and give me the big ‘peace out.’”

“Nah. That man is so into you.” She rummages through her purse, pulling out her phone. “It’s nice to see, you know.” Her eyes meet mine. “You look happy. I think he has a lot to do with that, and it’s really nice.”

I can’t help my smile but try to hide it by getting back to work. “Jonesy and I have time in the studio the next two days, and then–”

Nora gasps. “No way!” She squeals and starts waving her phone around.

“What?” I watch her wiggle around, about to fall off her chair. “What’s your problem?”

She stops moving, her eyes wide as she pushes her glasses up her nose. “You aren’t going to believe this. You just got an email. The FlyOver wants you to perform ahead of your release date.”

“What?!” I need her to tell me again. The FlyOver is one of the most well-known little cafes where some of the biggest singers and songwriters have been discovered. Only the elite get invited to perform at The FlyOver.

“Andie, they want you for a whole evening. Can you believe it?! This is amazing!”

“How do they even know about me?” Years ago, I went to some open mic nights, where I was noticed by some of the labels, but this is completely different.

“I don’t know.” Nora is tapping away on her phone. “Maybe all this stuff with Sean or the event. Maybe they’ve seen what I’ve posted about you releasing an album.”

“What are you doing?” Her fingers keep moving, and I’m starting to freak out.

“I’m texting Jonesy. He’s going to be your second. Then I’m emailing them back a giant YES!” She squeals, and I laugh.

I cannot believe it. I pull out my phone, my fingers flying over the screen as my heart races in disbelief.

ME: Something just happened.

SEAN: Are you ok?

ME: YES!

SEAN: Can you tell me what it is so I’ll quit worrying?

ME: I just got the MOST AMAZING news.

SEAN: Am I to assume by the all caps this is a really big deal?

ME: Only like the most amazing thing ever. I’ll tell you later.

SEAN: I have to wait?

ME: Uh… YES!!!
