“Look, thanks for rescuing me back there and for sticking up for me when my mother was about to lose her cookies over a dress,” she says as we approach what must be her SUV.

“She shouldn’t talk to you like that,” I say with more force than I mean to.

Andie smiles. “It only hurts if I let it. I’ve learned you can’t wish a blind person into seeing.”

That makes me smile. “So true. Doesn’t make it right.”

“Nope.” She unlocks her car and puts her guitar in the back. “If you ever want to try something else new, the kids at the hospital would lose their minds if you visited.”

“I’ll consider it.” I step away, leaving her.

“Hey, Sean,” she calls, and I turn back to see her standing with her door open. “I still don’t like you, but I might’ve pegged you wrong.”

I laugh. “You weren’t wrong, but fortunately, I’m not blind. I’ve just got to pay attention to where I’m going from now on.”

She smiles. “Good luck.”

I walk back to my car with a giant grin on my face. For the first time in a very long time, I feel something a little like…happiness.

Chapter 12

ANDIE

My phone is ringing. I reach out from under the covers, trying to find it so I can throw it against the wall and make it stop. Nora knows better than to call this early, and Gem isn’t up yet, so when I can’t find it, I ignore it. Two seconds after it stops ringing, it starts again.

I finally find it and rip it off my nightstand, squinting to see the name.

“Nora, there better be a–”

“Oh my goodness, have you seen it?”

Is she whispering?

Ugh. It’s too early for her dramatics.

“Have I seen what?” I whine.

“Andie.” Her alarmed snap has my eyes popping back open.

“What? I’m tired, and Ax is still sleeping, so can this wait?”

“Annnndieeeee,” she says more softly this time.

“Noorrrraaaa.”

“Andie.” The careful way she says my name this time has me paying attention. “You might want to check Instagram. Maybe search Sean. You know, your new buddy? Then call me back.” She says the last part quickly and hangs up.

What? What is she talking about now?I don’t need to see pictures of whatever Sean has going on. I just saw the man lastnight. I lie back down and pull the covers over my head. Then it hits me.Last night.

I pop up, open Instagram, and search for him. I don’t even need to scroll before I see it. I tap on the little box. It’s pictures of the two of us. The first is of us dancing, then of us standing next to each other, and from the angle, it really does look like we were…together.

I hit back and tap on another post. It’s only more pictures captioning me as Sean’s new girl. Discussions carry on in comments speculating about what happened between him and his ex. Then, comments turn their attention to me, wondering who I am and how the female population is in mourning.

I rub my forehead, running through what this actually means. It’s only a matter of time before people figure it out, and then…well.Shit…Shit!

I call Nora.

“Soooo…”
