“Yeah, I wasn’t sure how today was going to go. I had to meet with Craig and PR beforehand. Andie was there. They want us to battle the press with community outreach and positive press.”

Mark groans. “So, Andie, huh?”

Of course, this is what he’d pick out of that. “Yes. Her name is Andie, and no, nothing is going on.”

“Why not?”

If I weren’t driving, I’d ram my head into the steering wheel. “Dude, after this whole thing, I’m likely never dating again. She’s the one I was stuck in the elevator with.”

“The one who hates your handsomely covered guts?”

“Yeah, this didn’t help her see me in a better light. I told you she lost her husband, and this…they’re after her, and it’s not right.”

“What are you going to do? What exactly do they want?”

“I’m leaving it up to Andie. They want to show us working together in a professional capacity. Put on an event for kids that are hospitalized or something. It’ll be difficult during the season, but if she wants to, I’ll do it. A local organization would benefit, so that’s good.”

“Sounds like fun,” he grumbles. “Keep me posted.”

“Yeah. Sure.” I pull my truck into my garage, happy only two cars are sitting outside my gate tonight, hoping to catch something they can use.

“And you should definitely rethink this no-dating thing. If this Andie chick doesn’t like you, something tells me she might just be exactly what you need.”

The asswipe hangs up before I can respond. I climb out of my truck, ready to sit in the sauna and rest my sore body. I feel like I was hit by a freight train, and sometimes I wonder why I’m still doing this. But then I’m reminded of what it feels like to stand on the field with my team and carry the ball to the end zone. It’s a rush like no other.

After I sit in the steam for a while, I shower and find my phone to text Andie. She’s the last item on my list today, and something about that has a swirling feeling erupting in my gut as I sit to find her number.

Looking at my phone, I see she’s beat me to it.

ANDIE: Thank you for what you said today.

I don’t know if I’m more shocked that she said something nice or that she apparently watched the press conference andmaybe the game. Because I’m ready to move forward from the doom and gloom, I can’t help but mess with her. For some reason, a world where Andie is nice to me seems dangerous.

ME: Who is this???

ANDIE: Nevermind *eye roll emoji*

ME: Phew. I was worried someone might have broken in and stolen your phone. I think that’s the nicest thing you’ve ever said to me.

ANDIE: Don’t let it go to your head. I still don’t like you.

ME: Ok. Good. I was worried we might become friends through this whole ordeal.

ANDIE: No chance of that. I have enough friends…people I actually like.

ME: What? Like two and your grandma?

ANDIE: Actually, three. People aren’t my thing.

ANDIE: Careful. You better never let her hear you say that ‘G’ word, and her ears are sonar-rated.

ME: Since there’s not much competition, I think it might be time you had one you don’t like…all that much.

ANDIE: No thanks. I’m good. *Smiley face emoji*

ME: What do you want to do about the outreach?

ANDIE: Are we talking just outreach or outreach with a little ass-kicking?
