Tyrell bursts out laughing like it’s the funniest thing he’s ever heard. I could punch him.

“You know, he is pretty slow. We have to knock him around some to get him to step up and make a play.”

I glare at him. I know exactly what he’s doing, and it won’t work. My body may be responding to Andie, but my mind knows there’s no room in my life for a woman. I’ve been there and tried that, and it blew up in my face.

“We should probably make rounds and head out.” I want to wrap this up before Tyrell takes things any further.

“You’re putting on a concert at the event you two are working on?” Tyrell asks.

“Yeah, it’s just me and a band. Nothing too exciting.” Andie downplays it, but I’ve seen her with just a piano or guitar, and I know it will be unforgettable.

“Great. My wife will be the one in the front row pretending to be a backup singer. She’s still talking about you singing theNational Anthem.”

Andie smiles. “Awesome. I’m looking forward to it.” She grabs the handle on her case and drapes her bag across her body, then turns to me. “I don’t know if you saw it, but Miranda sent a list of questions we need to respond to. Let me know how you want to handle that.”

I nod. “I’ll take a look at it.”

She looks between Tyrell and me as we follow her out into the hallway. “Thanks for coming today. Have fun checking out their rooms, but be careful. They might never let you leave.” She smiles, her eyes shining as she turns away and walks in the opposite direction.

“Hmmmm,” Tyrell hums.

“Don’t even start,” I grumble. “It’s not happening.”

“I don’t know what, but something is happening, alright. You have your work cut out for you with that one.”

“Nobody’s working on anything.” I turn, moving toward the rooms.

I hear him snicker behind me. Then his patronizing hand rests on my shoulder, and I’m tempted to slap it away.

“That woman is beautiful, smart, and there isn’t an ounce of her that is interested in your good-looking, successful ass. She’s perfect, and if you hang out in denial too long, you’re going to miss your chance at snagging a woman who’s actually worthy of being in your life.”

“Simmons, you’re getting on my last nerve.”

“She’s too good for you. You wouldn’t stand a chance anyway.”

I shake my head, unable to argue with that.

Chapter 22

SEAN

ANDIE: I can’t meet today. Sorry.

ME: You ok? We only have a couple of weeks. We need to get back to Miranda.

ANDIE: Yeah, I know. Sorry.

ME: I have a game this weekend. Today is the only day I’m free.

ANDIE: I’m stuck at home today. I’ll call later. Hopefully, we can handle it over the phone.

______

It’s my day to sit on my couch, rest my body, and catch up on sports news. I was supposed to meet with Andie to finalize plans for the event in two weeks. But after her cryptic message, that’s apparently not happening.

I hope she’s ok. I’m sure she’s fine, but if she wasn’t, would she tell me?

I don’t care. It’s none of my business. Things come up, and she has a life. One that I’m not a part of, and that’s how it will be.
