KNOX

Even through the soundproof partition, I can hear her muffled screaming. Jesus, the girl’s sure got a set of lungs on her. I thought I’d have some peace and quiet once we got into the Jeep, but it turns out I was wrong.

My ears are still ringing from when I dragged her out of her apartment. I lift my right hand off the steering wheel and flex it, amazed that it still smarts from when she was struggling against me. She’s loudanda fighter. Guess I should’ve expected that, given who her father is.

There’s another feeling lingering on my hand, too. I know it’s fucked up, but I can’t get the softness of her skin off my mind. Touching her was like getting a glimpse of heaven.

I breathe out a humorless laugh and shake my head. Harboring even the slightest degree of desire for the boss’s daughter is a surefire way for me to lose my job—or worse.

I shift in the driver’s seat, ignoring the hard-on in my lap.

The sound of fists banging against the partition behind my head starts up again, more insistent this time than when I first started driving. I try to ignore it, but it’s like someone is banging a war drum in my face. I don’t like how panicked that banging sounds. Before, it was angry. Now it’s frantic.

I jab the button to lower the screen that’s been keeping her out of my view. As it slides down, I look up into my rearview mirror and see her seething face on the other side of the inch-thick bulletproof glass that remains in place between us. There doesn’t seem to be anything wrong, at least from my point of view.

I push the button to activate the intercom system.

“Can you quiet down back there?” I say. “I’m trying to drive.”

Her furious eyes stay pinned on me in the mirror.

“Let me out,” she says, her voice harsh as it comes through the speaker. “Pull over andlet me out.”

“Sorry, Princess. Can’t do that.”

“Goddamn it!” she says. “I don’t need any protection!”

“Yes, you do,” I reply.

She lets out an aggravated roar, then rubs her hands over her face in frustration. When her eyes meet mine again, they’re filled with even more rage.

“I’m getting the hell away from you the moment I get the chance,” she growls. “And don’t call meprincessagain.”

The corner of my mouth ticks up at her threat. Shit, I didn’t even realize I called her that. Guess it just slipped out because she’s so pretty. It’s her golden blonde hair, those little sparkly studs in her ears, and that sweet, curve-hugging outfit she’s got on. Put a tiara on her and drop her in a castle and she’d look right at home.

And here I am, the brutal knight who just stole her away from her nice little life.

At the king’s orders, of course.

I know I should put the screen back up and get her out of my line of sight. Every second I look at her adds more fuel to whatever this is that’s simmering inside me. I need to stay focused. For both my own sakeandhers.

But I can’t bring myself to push the button again.

HEIDI

I’m still out of my mind with anger when the Jeep finally comes to a stop and turns off. Mostly, I’m pissed off at my father—both for sending his stupid bodyguard to kidnap me, and also for being the kind of man that he is. But I’m pissed off at the bodyguard, too. Since when is it okay to barge into someone’s apartment and drag them out of it like he did?

Asshole.

As the bodyguard gets out of the Jeep, I ready myself to make a run for it. The moment the rear hatch opens up, I’m going to do everything I possibly can to escape. I don’t have a clue where we are—I tried to figure it out as we drove, but there were so many twists and turns, and I couldn’t concentrate—but that’s the least of my problems right now. I’ll find a way out of here. I just need to get away fromhim.

The rear hatch rattles, and I take a breath, steeling myself for what I’m about to do. I don’t want to have to get violent, or do anything like jab my fingers into the bodyguard’s eyes, but if I have to, I will.

As soon as the hatch cracks open, I throw my bodyweight against it. As I hope, the door flies open, and I hear a grunt as it slams into my kidnapper. Wasting no time, I jump out of the back of the vehicle, flying out into the cool air?—
