Hungrily, I grab the spoon and try a bite. The stew tastes like it took a full day to make. It’s rich with flavor and seasoning. And the bread…oh, yum. I don’t think there’s anything better than freshly baked bread. It’s heavenly, the crusty exterior in perfect balance with its soft, warm interior.

I glance across the table at Knox. He’s sitting down now, but there’s nothing in front of him on the table.

“Aren’t you going to eat?” I ask between bites.

He shakes his head. “Not hungry.”

I return to my food, savoring every bite of it. I can’t remember the last time I had a meal like this. If Knox is this good of a cook, maybe being locked up with him won’t be all that bad…

I peer up at him again. His gaze is fixed on the window above the kitchen sink, allowing me to study him more closely. His broad shoulders are far wider than the back of the chair, and his neck is thick and strong. The sight of his chiseled jawline makes me miss the bowl when I attempt to dip my spoon into it again.

It feels so messed up, being attracted to Knox. But I can’t help it. He’s brutally gorgeous. As much as his roughness scares me, it also elicits a tingly feeling deep in my body.

And then there’s the way he’s taking care of me right now. He could do anything he wanted to me. Yet he chose to bandage my wound and cook me a hot meal.

I feel a warm pulse between my legs, and I press my thighs together, embarrassed at my feelings. It’s so stupid, hoping that his actions have any deeper meaning. I’m the boss’s daughter. He’s simply doing his job, looking after me. That’s all it is.

Despite myself, I ask him the question I’m curious about anyway.

“Are you married, Knox?” I ask.

Instead of answering me, he stands up, the feet of his chair scraping against the floor as he pushes his chair back. His eyes are still focused on the kitchen window, but they look far more serious now.

“I’ll be back soon,” he mutters, and paces toward the door.

“Wait, what? Where are you going?” I ask, my heart pounding as I jump out of my chair and trail after him.

“I saw something moving out there. I’m going to check it out.”

“Wait, Knox?—”

He turns to look at me, and the intensity in his expression sends a shiver rushing up my spine.

“What?” he snaps.

I swallow, taking a step back. “Nothing. Go ahead.”

As he punches in the code to unlock the door from the inside, my attention instinctively falls to the keypad. Although he enters it quickly, I catch the numbers.

Without another word, he yanks open the door, steps outside, and pulls it closed behind him. A series of beeps follows as he locks me in from the outside. Then I hear his heavy footsteps as he stalks away from the cabin.

I remain frozen in place for several minutes, staring at the keypad in front of me. Less than an hour ago, I would have given anything to know the code, but now everything has changed. I can escape, but what’s the point? It will only put me in harm’s way. I’m safer here, with Knox looking out for me.

And so I walk over to the kitchen window and peer out into the woods, silently praying that Knox will be okay.

KNOX

An hour after leaving the cabin, I walk back to it, shaking my head at myself. I swear I saw someone creeping around out here. But I’ve searched every damn inch of the surrounding woods and didn’t find a thing.

Either they were smart and got the hell out when they saw me coming, or I’m letting my overprotective nature get the best of me.

Or maybe I just knew I needed to put some space between myself and the boss’s daughter. Being shut up in that little cabin with that curvy beauty is driving me insane. She’s too close to me. Every time I breathe in, it’s like I’m breathing inher, and it goes straight to my cock.

When I reach the cabin, I look at the front door and release a heavy sigh. As soon as I step back inside, it’s going to start again.

But what else am I supposed to do? Stay out here the whole fucking time?
