He laid a gentle kiss on her forehead. “But I like this too.”

When she smiled, it felt like a victory.

LEVI

Eva’s stare was eviscerating. “Got any more bright ideas?”

Levi was undeterred. Eva might not see the brilliance in his plans, but that’s what a long game was all about, right? This hadn’tquitegone how he’d hoped, but one couldn’t make an omelet… etc., etc. Despite his miscalculations, Sophiehadopened up. Hell, she’d cried. Levi could barely believe it.

He finally opened the door, watching as Sophie and Mitch shared a relieved look and headed out.

“A mere bump in the road. Don’t you worry about it.”

Eva muttered a curse. “I swear to Fate, if you even think about doing anything else without telling me…” She jabbed his chest with one finger. “You’ve had your turn. Now watch how it’s really done.”

Levi captured her hand in his, enjoying the sparkle in her eyes. “The floor is yours, my love.”

ChapterThirteen

EVA

Eva pocketed her tools and wiped her hands. Mitch wouldn’t be happy, but he’d forgive her eventually.

Regardless of Levi’s intentions, his half-thought-out attempts at winning their bet had done little to move the needle in his favor. So far, all he’d done was reinforce Sophie’s habit of boxing potential suitors firmly in the “benefits and no more” category. She loved the rogue, but he took reckless to new heights.

Mitch was trying, but he had more patience than was healthy, and he’d probably wait forever for Sophie to come around. But they didn’t have that kind of time.

No. If Sophie and Mitch were going to have a chance, a real one, then it would be up to Eva to make it happen.

MITCH

Mitch tried again, groaning at the resultingclick, clicksound. “You’ve got to be kidding me. Gisborne, come on. Don’t do this.”

Sophie rolled to a stop beside his car. “Trouble?”

“He won’t start. And I’d rather not spend the next few hours waiting for a tow.”

“Leave it and call first thing in the morning. I can give you a lift home.”

“You’d do that?”

“I’m not completely without feelings, Mitch,” she said, but she was smiling. “Now get in.”

Her poor car had seen better days. Most of the left side was scuffed, white paint was missing in spots, and there was an angry gouge along the front bumper. “Do you moonlight as a crash test dummy?” he asked as he buckled up.

Despite the car’s appearance, its engine ran smoothly. “Shut up. Not everyone loves their car as much as you do.”

“Gisborne and I share a profound bond.”

She snorted and rolled toward the exit of the parking garage. “Just tell me where I’m going.”

As they took the first corner, two empty water bottles rolled out from under his seat. He cocked a questioning brow at Sophie.

She waved him off. “Just throw those in the back.”
