Chapter Nine

Christian

Holy. Fucking. Hell.

Penny’s a virgin. And she’s mine. I’ve never felt this way before, possessive, obsessed. As I watch her eyes flutter closed, I wonder how long I should let her rest before I wake her up with my tongue in her sweet pussy.

I run a hand over her hair, loving the way it slides through my fingers, her apple scent teasing my nose. Unable to keep my hands off her, I marvel at the smooth expanse of her skin and watch her glorious breasts rise and fall. If I stay here much longer, she’s not going to get the nap she needs.

Restless, I quietly slide out of bed, tossing some pants on, and opening the door. There’s a puppy pile of animals waiting as I slip into the hallway. Careful not to step on any of her fur babies, I head to the kitchen, intent on making some lunch. Gotta feed my Little Bird before we go for another round.

Smiling to myself, I hum a little tune and open the refrigerator, finding it well-stocked. I settle on making some sandwiches and pasta salad, and when I turn around to get started, I notice that Chaos and company have all followed me.

I toss Chaos and Bacon a bit of an apple, and they happily crunch away as they head out into the backyard to play. However, the ducklings stay, waddling around the kitchen, shadowing me as I prepare lunch. Each step I take, they take.

“Oh, no, no, no, little friends,” I tell them.

Shit. Wasn’t there a movie or something about that? I find my phone and send a text to my sister Kenna. She always knows random things.

Me: Is there a thing about baby ducks? Do they follow people around?

Kenna: Ya, they imprint. Why?

Me: No reason.

Kenna: There’s a reason.

Me: Well, I rescued a few baby ducks…

Kenna: Awwww I’m an Auntie! Congratulations Duck Daddy.

Awesome. That seems like a potential problem for future me.

A thump reaches my ears and I freeze. It sounds like Penny may be awake; nerves flutter in my gut, and I hope she isn’t upset that I raided her refrigerator.

Placing one foot in front of the other, I make my way back down the hallway, glancing back to see the little yellow puff balls waddling after me. As I am just about to reach her room, my eyes snag on a picture hanging on the wall.

The picture is set in a light grey frame, and the people in it look quite familiar. I scan each of their faces, awareness prickling at the back of my mind. There is a tall blond man, a stunning blond woman, and a younger blond girl. As I take a closer look at thefourth person, I realize it’s a younger Penelope… who bears a striking resemblance to Rosie at that age. My eyes flick back to the blond girl and a sense of unease whispers down my neck.

What. The. Fuck.

Taking a step closer to the picture, I scrutinize it. The blond girl is older than Penelope, but there is no denying that she looks an awful lot like Rosie’s fraternal twin sister, Briar.

The door to Penny’s room snicks open, and as I turn toward her I am shocked by the sadness on her beautiful face. But upon seeing me, her features transform, shock and joy quickly replacing the glum expression.

“You’re still here,” she exclaims with delight.

“Of course, Little Bird, I couldn’t sleep, so I made us some lunch,” I say, but my eyes stray back to that picture. Her gaze follows mine, and her bright smile disappears.

“Who are they?” I ask.

“My family,” she states somberly. Her shoulders slump forward and she crosses her arms protectively over her stomach. “Thomas, Patricia, and Lizzy Royale.”

The names sound familiar, and it takes a moment for all the pieces to click into place. They’re famous; her dad is a big actor, her mother’s a model, and Lizzy’s a reality TV sensation. I don’t remember any of them ever mentioning Penelope, but I don’t really follow pop culture.

Looking at the stunning woman before me, her face now etched with uncertainty; I realize I need to say the right thing.

“Well, I don’t know much about them, but I hear Lizzy picks her nose,” I intone dryly.
