Rosie: If you drive around the block one more time I’m going to go stand in the road.

Rosie: Get your butt in here.

Rosie: There’s yummy garlic bread.

Rosie: And Briar is on the other side of the country visiting friends.

“Rosie says we better get in there,” I sigh. My twin is a force to be reckoned with. We’ve been getting closer and closer over the last few weeks, and she’s quickly becoming the sister I always hoped for.

“You can do this,” he says, squeezing my hand as the house comes into view again.

The truck slows before coming to a complete stop in the driveway. Christian turns it off, then pulls me toward him, kissing me until I’m breathless.

“I love you so much, and they are going to love you too,” he gives me one last peck before hopping out of the car and quickly moving around to my side.

Deep breath in. Exhale slow.

My door swings open, letting the fresh spring air in. The scent of lilacs and wildflowers floats on the breeze. His hands reach up, gripping my hips before helping me out. Sliding me slowly down his muscled torso.

Our hands twine together as we walk toward the door, and for once I’m not alone. I don’t have to face hard things all by myself. I look over at him, love reflecting in my eyes.

My knuckles fall gently against the door, and it is flung open instantly, revealing an older version of myself. Our faces are the same shape, our curves are similar, and our eyes are like looking in the mirror. Hers fill with tears as she takes me in, throwing her arms wide and pulling me into a strong hug as I still grip Christian’s hand tight in my own.

“Penny,” she says my name like a prayer. “Welcome home, figlia mia.”

She steps back, patting my hair and ushering us into the warm house. The scent of pasta sauce and garlic bread makes my stomach grumble as Rosie bounces into the room with Mr. Swann following right behind her.

They all cluster around me, filling me with a sense of belonging.

In this moment I finally understand. If I hadn’t gone through so much, I wouldn’t be able to appreciate the beauty of this unconditional love. I wouldn’t be able to understand real true happiness, now that I’ve found it.

This is just the start.

HAPPILY EVER, FOREVER
