“Long,” I reply.

Dad looks at the time on the microwave display. “Did you do overtime?”

“No, I went to the skatepark.”

My parents share a baffled look.

Parker clutches my shoulders. “Kylie got on my skateboard.”

Dad claps loudly. “That’s amazing. Did someone take a video?”

“Dad,” I groan.

“Next time,” Parker says, letting me go. “I promise.”

Dad points finger guns at him. “I’ll hold you to it.”

Mortifying.

“Actually, I think Lewis took a photo,” I say, glancing at Parker.

Parker nods. “I’ll ask him to send it to me.”

“So, what are you guys up to?” Mom asks. “Here for another dance party?”

“Parker was worried because there was no music playing,” I tease.

Dad snaps his fingers. “We can remedy that.”

“No,” I blurt, stopping him from asking the speaker to ‘play Arnold’s Hits.’ “Don’t worry about it. We’re gonna take Brandy for a walk.”

“Good idea,” Mom says. “That lazy girl needs to get out of the house.”

Parker nudges me. “Ask them about the trip.”

Both my parents’ ears prick, and Mom asks, “What trip?”

I suck in a hesitant breath. “What do you think about me going camping?”

My parents share a look, holding back laughter.

“Guys,” I whine.

“Sorry, honey,” Dad says, wiping under his eye. “It’s just, it’s you.”

“Exactly,” Mom agrees. “You and camping are not words that usually go in the same sentence.”

“And usually Parker doesn’t visit,” I mumble. “Things change.”

My parents’ expressions brighten, looking at each other with hopefulness.

“Okay, Kikki, we’ll take this seriously,” Mom says. “Tell us what’s happening.”

“I don’t exactly know the details,” I say, looking at Parker for help. “Can you explain it to them?”

“Sure. It’s a trip with my friends. We go every year.”

Dad looks at Parker with scrutiny. “And they’re parents?”
