He rubs behind his neck, looking away. “Yeah. Just think about how hard Lewis will fall for you.”

“I just feel like I’m putting on an act around him. It’s easier with you because you’re well aware I’m pretending.”

“Just have a little faith.”

“Did Lewis tell you that Yvie thought he kissed me on the ferris wheel?”

Parker’s mouth hangs open.

“I swear he wanted to kiss me outside his house. It felt like it could’ve happened.”

“Man, you’re getting so much closer to him than I am with Yvie.”

I shake my head. “I wouldn’t be so sure. Yvie was mad at Lewis for not being as attentive as you. I wouldn’t be surprised if he only started thinking about me to make Yvie jealous.”

“No way.”

“Yes way. Lewis was so annoyed because Yvie said he wasn’t as good a boyfriend as you.”

Parker’s eyes enliven. “She said that?”

“It’s what they were fighting about before Yvie left the fairgrounds.”

Parker leans back on the counter. “Whoa.”

“You’ll need to keep up the good work if she’s still going on the camping trip.”

Parker’s eyebrows lift. “She needs to go on the camping trip.”

I nod. “It’ll be your time to shine. You can make sure there are no spiders.”

Parker laughs. “Oh, man. I can’t believe that worked.”

“Parker,” William whines, approaching the counter. “Are we going or what?”

I untie my apron. “I’m just about done. I’ll punch out, and then we can go.”

After I say goodbye to Laura, I follow the boys out to Parker’s car. As we leave the parking lot, William rambles on about wanting to meet Brandy. When we turn off Main Street, the car’s media display lights up with the notification,“Mom calling.”

Parker hits the green answer button. “Hello?”

“Hi honey,” his mother replies. “Can you go to the grocery store before coming home?”

“Sure, we’re already on our way home.”

“No, we’re not,” William blurts. “We’re going to Kylie’s house.”

“Oh, hi Kylie,” his mother says in a higher octave.

My mouth runs dry. “Hi, Mrs. Kelly.”

“I’m making tacos for dinner,” she says through the speakers. “Why don’t you join us?”

“Oh, umm,” I stammer.

“She can’t,” Parker says matter-of-factly.

“Oh, come on,” Mrs. Kelly insists. “We’d love to have you over. What about tomorrow night?”
