No. “Of course.”

“You’re the best.” He gives Brandy another pat, telling her, “Wish me luck, girl.”

“We’re both sending you good vibes.”

Parker sends me a wink. “At least you know Lewis won’t be with her. Maybe you can go next door and try again with him.”

I hug my middle. “I don’t think I’m up for that. Besides, I need to stay here and make sure the cakes are perfect.”

“Good luck with them, dessert queen.”

Parker leaves and I lean against the kitchen counter with a heavy sigh.

Why does the notion of him leaving to see her hurt so much? It’s what I want. If he can be with Yvie, it frees Lewis to be with me.

I remember Lewis’s attitude from yesterday. Not only how he acted toward me, but his gruffness toward his dad. It wasn’t exactly attractive that Lewis didn’t get down on the kitchen floor and help his dad fix the plumbing issue.

I sigh again and glance at the oven.

At least I have baking to concentrate on.

It’s the only part of this day that makes any sense.

Twenty-Two

“So what happened withYvie?”

He still hasn’t replied to this text message. Every time I check the text chain, my stomach clenches harder. It’s not like him to ignore my messages.

Did it not go well?

Did it gotoowell?

Oh my gosh. Did Yvette see my text message and force him not to reply? Are they nowtogethertogether?

Or, did she see my text and it caused a fight? Did I ruin Parker’s shot at being with her and now he’s mad at me?
