Mrs. Kelly gestures at Parker. “Kylie, looks like you’d make a great nurse. You bandaged him up so well.”

Kurtis peers at his brother’s hand. “What happened, Parker?”

Parker lifts his hand. “I grazed a knife when we were cutting cherries to go in the cake.”

“Wait, what happened?” William asks, dawdling into the kitchen.

“It’s not a big deal,” Parker says flatly. “I just cut my finger.”

William’s eyes bug. “Did you need stitches?”

Parker deadpans his brother. “No. It was a graze.”

Kurtis sniggers, folding his arms. “Good thing you didn’t slice off your hand and need a blood transfusion.”

“Kurtis,” his dad says in a warning tone.

Mrs. Kelly slams cutlery down. “Why would you say something like that?”

Kurtis shrugs, laughing to himself.

My gaze pivots around the family members. Clearly, there’s a piece of information I’m missing. I land on Parker, who has a green tinge and averts his eyes.

“What have I told you about pushing buttons, Kurtis?” Mr. Kelly says.

Kurtis smirks. “Shouldn’t Kylie know what she’s getting herself into?”

Their mom huffs. “This dinner is for us to get to know Kylie. She doesn’t need to know how much of a brat you are.”

Their dad gains my attention. “I hear you work at Morton’s Café. Do they treat you well down there?”

I smile and nod. “Very well. Plus, they allow me to perfect my baking skills.”

He gestures at the cake on the counter. “Looks like you’re doing well for yourself.”

“She won’t be a nurse,” Parker says. “She’s too incredible at baking.”

“We should skip dinner and go straight to dessert,” William pipes up.

Their parents chuckle, settling into the light-hearted vibe.

Mr. Kelly nods at William. “You eat your dinner and then you can have cake.”

William pouts, scraping his fork across his plate.

“I still can’t believe all the detail you put into decorating the cake,” Mrs. Kelly says in awe. “I’d almost give in to William and skip dinner.”

My shoulders bounce with my laugh.

“Aren’t we worried there’s Parker’s blood in the cake?” Kurtis blurts.

Parker rolls his eyes. “I didn’t bleed in the cake.”

Kurtis’s lip upturns. “I’m not risking it.”

“Eww.” William grimaces. “Did Parker really ruin the cake?”

Mrs. Kelly rubs her forehead. “Can we have dinner without you boys going at it?”
