“But it doesn’t have to stay that way.”

“I don’t want to be with him if he wants her.”

He gives me a doubtful look. “Are you sure about that?”

I turn away, because I’m definitely not sure.

“I didn’t think I’d want to be with Yvette after seeing Lewis macking on her, but I do.”

“Hey, Parker,” Maddy says, moving toward the booths. “What are you still doing here?”

“Oh, nothing,” Parker says coyly. “Just trying to convince Kylie to date me.”

Maddy’s mouth falls open and smile lines crinkle around her eyes. “Oh my gosh, really? This is so dang cute!”

In revulsion, I swipe the spray bottle and cloth and move further down my section.

“Why won’t you give this a shot?” Parker asks, following me.

I huff, scrubbing harder than necessary on a tabletop. “Because it’s ridiculous. I’m not interested in dating you, Parker.”

He smirks. “Yeah, that’s kinda the point.”

“You really want Yvette thinking you’re into another girl? It makes no sense. I don’t want Lewis thinking I’m into anybody else.”

“So you’d prefer him to date Yvette without any distractions?”

Exhausted, I plant my hands on my hips. “How would us dating help break them up?”

“It’ll help more than doing nothing.” Parker slides into the booth, resting his clasped hands over the freshly cleaned surface. “Yvette was asking Tabitha to double date with her and Lewis.”

My stomach somersaults. “She’s already talking about going on dates with him?”

Sincerity fills Parker’s expression as he sits in the booth. “There’s still tension between the girls, so Tabby didn’t give Yvette an answer. If we act fast, we can get in on the double date before Tabitha caves.”

Queasiness rises through me, and I awkwardly swallow it down. “That’s your plan? Go on double dates with them? I don’t think I could stand the torture. Chem lab is barely tolerable, and their relationship isn’t even official yet.”

Parker sits forward, ensuring he’s captured my attention. “Think about how much worse it’ll be after spring break if they become lab partners. I know I don’t want to see that. We can’t admit defeat. This is our best shot. You gotta do this with me.”

Wincing, I rub a hand over my face. “Just let me finish my shift. Then we can talk about it.”
