“You always sit with me when I’m alone, even when I say I’m fine.”

He shrugs. “I just think everyone should have company.”

“Then there’s all the encouragement and positivity you give me.”

“Well, a negative attitude gets you nowhere.”

“And there’s making sure no one says anything hurtful to me.” I run a finger across my lashline. “And I can’t thank you enough for holding me at the fair when I was hurt.”

He scratches the top of his head. “It was nothing.”

“It was comforting. It stung so dang much, and everyone was arguing, and I just wanted to disappear.” I place my hand on his arm. “And you did that for me. It’s like I got to be on pause. Thank you for that.”

“Why wouldn’t I do it for you? You’re such a good person, and I like being around you.” He lifts his hand toward mine, but doesn’t touch it. “It’s all good. I’d do it for you again anytime you needed it.”

I remove my hand, shifting awkwardly. I clear my throat as I look away, ready to change the subject, but Parker clutches my wrist. I look up at him, my lips parting in surprise. Parker gazes into my eyes and his hand caresses the side of my face.

“I want to kiss you,” he whispers. “But I know you don’t want that.”

A tingle races down my spine. Feeling slightly dizzy, I clutch his bicep for the support I need.

“I only said kissing was off the table on double dates,” I say with my mouth rapidly drying. “I don’t see anyone else here.”

Parker’s Adam’s apple bobs and he wets his lips. “Are you sure about this?”

I smile. “Do you still want to kiss me?”

His hands slip behind my back and I love feeling every digit press against the material of my tank top. “Yes.”

I bite into my lip and raise onto my tippy toes. “Then kiss me.”

Parker leans in, but he hesitates.

“It’s okay,” I breathe.

He shakes his head, pulling away. “No. You told me you want your next kiss to be from Lewis.”

My heart sinks and my head can’t work out why. “But, I want...”

“What?” he murmurs. “What do you want?”

“I don’t really know,” I mumble. “But, at this moment, I have a growing urge to kiss you.”

“But we’re not meant to be together.”

I shake my head. “I don’t care about that right now.”

He smiles, leaning back in. “Good. Me either.”

Before I’m able to take a breath, Parker’s lips are on mine, giving me all the life I need. I snake my arms behind his neck and lean my body against his. His heartbeat patters against my chest, and I tilt my head to get more out of his kiss. When my back arches, his hands press more firmly against it. A cool breeze whirls around us, helpfully lowering my elevated body temperature.

When we pull out of the kiss, Parker pants as his face rests by mine. “I can’t get enough of that,” he whispers. “You’re so dang good at it.”

A silent giggle shakes my shoulders as he holds me. “I don’t know how,” I whisper as he brushes loose hair off my face. “All I do is put my lips on yours.”

“Well, it’s working,” he says with a chuckle. “You must have a natural talent for it.”

“Why don’t you stop talking and kiss me again?”
