Twenty-Five

Ijust couldn’t helpmyself. I made a batch of pistachio macarons to take on the camping trip. After last night, I can’t get Parker out of my head, and just want to see him happy. I also made lemon bars and blueberry muffins. I can practically do them in my sleep, which allowed me to put the majority of my effort into the macarons.

When the baked goods are on cooling racks, and I’m almost finished cleaning up, the doorbell rings.

“Mom?” I call out. “You got that?”

Mom doesn’t reply, so I dry my hands with a dish towel, and move toward the front door.

I open the door and almost lose my balance. “Lewis?”

“Hi,” he says with a small smile. “Do you have a minute to talk?”

“Umm,” I falter. “Yeah, sure. Do you want to come in?”

“Thanks.”

Lewis comes inside as Brandy scampers up the hallway. She skids to a halt, looking up at Lewis. She cries, lowering her head as her tail dips between her legs.

“What’s with her?” Lewis asks.

I look between them and my heart sinks. “I think she thought you were Parker.”

Lewis puffs out his chest. “Hey, girl, I’m better than Parker.”

He moves forward, reaching out his hand to pet Brandy. She whimpers again and retreats to the back room.

“Is Parker over here a lot?” Lewis asks.

How am I supposed to answer that? Parker is supposed to be my boyfriend. But how much do I admit to the boy who I’ve always wanted to be my boyfriend?

“Just before or after dates,” I say awkwardly. “You know, nothing too serious.”

“And is it nothing too serious that he was over at my girlfriend’s house too?”

I bite into my lip and clutch my elbows, shifting my weight between feet.

Lewis sighs. “Sorry. You probably don’t want to hear this.”
