I clench my teeth, wincing.

“Stop looking so scared, would ya?” Parker teases. “Tomorrow at school, bring something you baked and give it to me in front of Lewis. It’ll drive him crazy jealous.”

My heart flutters with hope. “You think so?”

Parker swats a hand. “Are you kidding me? Your desserts are incredible, and we’ll use them to remind Lewis that you once made them especially for him.”

A twinge of nerves hit me. “You think he’s forgotten?”

Parker nods. “Yeah, but don’t take it personally. His memory’s like a sieve. That’s why I do most of his chemistry homework.”

I give him a doubtful look. “Youdo his homework?”

Parker grabs his hips. “Is that so hard to believe?”

“Ah, yeah,” I say, dragging out the words. “I’ve shared classes with you since middle school. I never thought of you as academically gifted.”

Parker laughs. “Well, thanks. I wouldn’t call myself a nerd, but I can remember enough to pass my classes. It’s just chemistry that seems to take twice as much effort because your partner affects your grades.”

I sigh. “Tell me about it. Try working with Yvette.”

“Well, if we successfully break them up, I’ll take her off your hands.”

“It’d be a dream to sit with Lewis, but I can’t imagine working overtime to compensate for his grades when I’ll be busy staring at how beautiful he is.”

“Don’t make me gag,” Parker jokes. “How about this? If you promise to put your all into this plan, I promise to keep helping Lewis with his homework so your grades don’t tank.”

I rock on my heels. “You’d do that?”

He sends me a wink. “I just need you to play my girlfriend for a week. What do you say?”

I chew on my lip. “You really want Yvette that bad?”

“I’ve seen how you look at Lewis. You want him badly, don’t you?”

Undeniably, I nod.

“I feel about her how you do about him. I saw it in your eyes. That’s why I think this will work.” He pauses for a beat, vulnerability coloring his face. “That is, if we work together.”

“But how would this work?”

Parker laughs, running a hand down the back of his neck. “I don’t exactly know. I’ve never had a fake girlfriend before.”

I let slip, “Have you ever had a real girlfriend before?”

He twitches awkwardly. “Well, no, not exactly.” He clears his throat, standing taller. “But I’ve had dates before. You know, like school dances.”

I nod hurriedly, hoping it’ll help dissipate his nerves. “Yeah, right, of course.”

“Look, I just think this will work best if we get the ball rolling on this relationship, ASAP,” Parker says. “I really don’t want Yvie and Tabitha to make up before we get our chance.”

“I don’t think we need to worry,” I reply. “Yvette is constantly complaining that she doesn’t have any friends.”

Parker tilts his head. “She is?”

“In chemistry,” I elaborate. “She’s always muttering about losing her friends. That one moved away and the other’s not talking to her. I don’t know why she’s constantly whining at me.”

Parker snaps his fingers in front of my face. “Kylie, wake up. This is your moment to strike.”
