Oh boy. What were they doing in those bushes?

Everyone settles in around the fire and Kai’s mom drops off the ingredients for s’mores.

As she walks away, she frowns at the sleeping bag. “Jamie, how about you get your own sleeping bag?”

Jamie groans and shimmies out of Milo’s sleeping bag.

The group laughs as she plonks on a log with Kai and Tabitha.

“Milo,” Kai says, reaching out to whack his brother’s sleeping bag. “Put the book down and join the humans.”

He grunts and sits up. “Fine. But only because I want to be near Jamie.”

Parker nudges me. “So, is there any technique for making the perfect s’more?”

Tabitha leans forward. “Yeah, Kylie. You’d have some tricks up your sleeve.”

I giggle. “No, you can’t really mess them up. I’d just say, be generous with your layers.”

As everyone gets underway with their s’more making, conversation circles around Jamie and Milo.

“Who knew they’d end up being the cutest couple on this trip?” Tabitha says with a giggle.

Jamie grimaces. “Don’t make me barf.”

Milo’s shoulders bounce as he laughs. “Nice.”

Jamie laughs and leans against him.

Yvette smirks and shifts closer to Lewis. “How are they cute together?”

Tabitha rolls her eyes, and no one answers the question. I let my gaze stay low so I can avoid her vapid comments.

Yvette clears her throat, clearly wanting attention. “Hey, Jamie. It’s funny how you never dated anyone, and then you randomly ended up with a guy like Milo.”

“How is...” Jamie stutters, losing her cool. “How is that funny?”

Yvette shrugs. “Because of your mom.”

Jamie sucks in a breath, sitting back.

Milo sits forward, protectively putting an arm out in front of her.

“It’s funny how you didn’t turn out like her,” Yvie babbles. “I mean, didn’t she have a bunch of boyfriends? Isn’t that why you didn’t know who your dad was?”

Jamie’s eyes grow wide as her face pales.

“Yvie!” Tabitha snaps. “How could you say something like that?”

Yvette flinches, shrinking inward. “What? It was just a question.”

“You were calling her mom a slut,” Kai blurts.

Jamie sniffs hard and pushes Milo’s hand away, getting up from her seat.

“I don’t get why everyone’s upset,” Yvette says, launching into victim mode. “It’s not like everyone doesn’t know her mom’s past.”

“Stop talking about her mom,” Milo orders, standing up. “You don’t know anything about her.”
