“Umm, no. That’s something I’ve thought about doing a lot.” I shy my face away. “It was something else.”

He leans forward. “What was it?”

“I can’t say. It’s stupid.”

“Come on. It could help me. Despite my dad’s lame advice, I don’t want to be single forever.”

“Well, I don’t know how much it’ll help you. I think it’s a very me-specific issue.”

“Just tell me. It’s starting to freak me out.”

I exhale hard. “You didn’t dance.”

He sits back, flabbergasted. “Huh?”

“At my house. You didn’t dance.”

“At your house?” he questions. “When?”

A server brings over our burgers and I thank her before telling Lewis, “When you needed a wrench because there was a leak in your kitchen.”

He squints. “You’re not making any sense.”

“How can you not remember this?”

“I remember getting the wrench, but I have no idea what dancing has to do with anything.”

I flatten my hands on the table. “I told you it was the house rules. To dance when the music is playing.”

He shakes his head. “Your crush on me ended because I didn’t dance in your house?”

“I know it sounds crazy, but Parker danced right away. It just felt like a bad omen that you wouldn’t even humor me.”

His expression softens. “And that’s what made things complicated? Parker did something you wanted, but you thought you liked me more?”

“Exactly.”

“I thought maybe it’d be when I made fun of the band you and Parker like.”

I smirk. “That was strike two.”

I don’t need to tell him strike three was when he shattered my illusion of him being my quiet, patient, and sensitive guy.

“Well, I’m sorry if I made you feel bad because I didn’t dance with you. I remember that day. I was miserable because Yvie wasn’t talking to me. I had zero capacity to pay attention to another girl.”

My gut sinks. “Dang. You really liked her. I’m sorry it didn’t work out.”

“It’s okay. We didn’t really get to know each other. I’m not so sure we were the right fit.”

“Could Parker and Yvie be the right fit?”

Lewis shrugs. “They might find something in common.”

I hug my middle and stare at my lap. “I just can’t see it happening.”

“If they get together, will you tell Parker how you feel?”

I blow out a hard breath. “No, I couldn’t do that to him. Whatever happens, I want him to be happy.”
