I stomp my foot. “I’m capable of more things than you give me credit for.”

Tess fidgets. “Mom and Dad are just saying to stay away from that boy.”

I curl my fist as I turn to my sister. “Don’t you start.”

Tess pouts. “Kikki, I just...”

“I don’t care about being with Lewis. I just used him for a ride.”

Dad tenses. “A ride to where?”

My throat tickles and my eyes itch. “To Parker’s.”

“Oh, honey,” Mom breathes.

Before the pity party sets in, I fly past them, down the hallway.

“Kikki, wait,” Tess calls out.

I rush up the stairs and toward my bedroom. Before I can slam the door, Tess juts out a hand, keeping the door open.

“Leave me alone,” I whine.

“Talk to me,” she whispers, following me to the bed.

I sit on the edge, wiping my eyes dry. “I want him back, Tess.”

She sits beside me, rubbing a circle on my back. “I know.”

I shake my head, swallowing a sob. “No, you don’t.”

“Yes, I can see how he...”

“No, you don’t understand,” I cut her off. “You don’t know the whole truth.”

Her hand falls off my back. “What do you mean?”

My vision blurs until I blink it clear. “I kept my relationship from you because I know you don’t want me to date.”

“I just didn’t want you...”

“To get hurt. I know. Just let me finish.”

“I’m sorry. Go on.”

I blow out a long breath. “Mom and Dad don’t know this, but my relationship with Parker was never real.”

She squints. “But they said he was over here and got their approval.”

“I guess we put on a good act.”

“This doesn’t make any sense.”

“I never meant the lie to get out of control.”

She recoils. “You were lying to Mom and Dad?”

“Not about where we were going and what we were doing. Just that our relationship was fake.”
