“Not possible. I know there’s a good person under there somewhere. You just need to learn to think before you speak.”

“My friends used to reward me for saying mean things. Now I don’t have them and I don’t know what I’m supposed to do.”

I clasp her hand. “I know I said you should be single, but I don’t want you to be alone. I couldn’t live with myself if you became isolated in your misery.”

“I deserve to be alone. I almost slapped you for goodness’s sake.”

“No one deserves to be alone,” I whisper. “If you let me, I’d like to help you and Tabitha mend your friendship.”

“I’ve tried and failed so many times. She’d never want that.”

“At least let me help you figure out your own interests. Maybe there’s a club you can join to make new friends.”

A hopeful smile emerges. “Yeah, maybe.”

I give her a quick hug. “I just want you to feel better. However that looks for you.”

“Thank you, Kylie. Dang. Parker is so lucky to have you.” She glances at the bathroom door. “Are you here with your families?”

“Yeah, it’s the big meeting.”

“That’s so cute. I’ve never had that before.”

“Find a guy who values you. Someone you truly, deeply love.”

She smiles and nods.

“I gotta get back out there. Will you be okay?”

“I will be.” As I leave, she adds, “Oh, Kylie, I promise to never try to slap you again.”

I hold onto the door handle, tugging it open. “If you can promise never to say mean things to other people, that’d be a great start too.”

“I’ll do my very best.”

I walk back to the table and Parker’s eyes are locked onto me.

“What just happened?” he asks as I take my seat beside him.

“I was just checking to see if Yvette was okay.”

Nervousness creases his brow. “There was no slapping?”

“No, of course not. Although, she did apologize for that.”

“So, everything’s good?” he asks hesitantly.

I nod. “She just needs to find herself.”

Parker interlaces his fingers with mine. “I’m so lucky to have met a girl who already found herself.” He kisses the back of my hand. “I just had to pull Kikki out of the house.”

“You were the missing piece that helped me get my confidence.”

“No way. It was all you.”

“How about we needed each other?” I compromise. “I can’t imagine you having this dinner if you never opened up about your birth mother. And we definitely wouldn’t be taking this trip tomorrow.”

Parker shifts in his chair. “I know. I don’t know why I’m so nervous about it.”
