I hang a thumb over my shoulder. “I baked for Lewis and he just ate one of my cookie dough cups.”

Josie lights up, grinning widely. “Oh my gosh. You did a grand gesture for Lewis?”

I swallow hard, feeling unbalanced. “Yes, but not exactly. Lewis thinks I baked for Parker.”

“Parker Kelly? What, why?”

“Umm, because I... Because he and I...”

Josie blinks at me, waiting for more. “What? You and he, what?”

I throw my hands up. “I think we’re dating?”

Josie throws her head back, laughing so loud it turns every nearby head.

I grab onto her shoulders, shushing her harshly.

She slams a hand over her mouth, her eyes watering from the hysterics. Stifling her laughs, she whispers, “Sorry. It’s just the silliest thing I’ve ever heard.”

I nod. “I know. But he asked me yesterday at the café.”

“What? Are you for real?” She looks from side to side. “You’re dating Parker Kelly?”

I rub the ache in my chest and force out the words. “It’s fake.”

Her face screws up. “Fake? What the heck are you talking about?”

The bell overhead rings, and I groan at the intrusion. “I’ll tell you everything at lunch. Meet in the library?”

She shrugs, looking at me strangely. “Yeah, okay, I guess. Are you sure you don’t want to skip class and talk about whatever’s going on with you?”

“Sure, speed up my anxiety further by skipping class,” I joke. “No way. I’ll just get myself together so I can explain this properly.”

“Good, because this is the first time I haven’t understood something you’ve told me. A bikini, baking for Lewis, and something fake with Parker? Maybe you should see the school nurse.”

I give her my best smile. “I’m fine. I promise.”

Oh gosh. This is going to be harder than I thought. How am I supposed to get through this when I can’t even explain it to my best friend?

I blow out a breath and make my way down the hall. I just need to keep my head down and get through my classes. Hopefully, without hearing or seeing anything to do with Lewis and Yvette.

Thankfully, my first two classes go without a hitch.

On my way to history, Parker walks past with Lewis. He scoops his arm around my waist and pulls me into a hug.

“Uh, hi,” I stammer.

Parker chuckles, looking down at me. “Hi.”

“Umm, I need to get to class.”

“Oh, I know,” Parker says with a grin. He spins me back toward history class and winks. “See you later, Green.”

I give him a hesitant smile and cautious wave.

When he catches up with Lewis, Lewis throws his palms up with confusion. “What was that about?”

Parker shrugs. “Just saying hi to Kylie.”
