Parker squeezes my shoulder, and I watch him stare down his friend. “As long as no one harasses Kylie, we’ll be fine.”

Kai nods at Parker. “Say you’re sorry to Tabby.”

Kai walks away and I bump Parker’s hand off me.

Parker spins me around to face him. “Stick to the plan. You’ve gotta be friends with Yvie, not Tabby.”

I shake my head. “It’s not worth jeopardizing your friendships. I don’t want you and Kai at war because of this silly fake relationship.”

“Don’t worry about it. Kai and I are fine. We’ve said worst things to each other about dumber stuff.”

“You should apologize because it looks like you argued with your friend because I came into your life. And I don’t want everyone to hate me.”

Parker nods. “Lewis might not want to date you if Kai thinks you’re meddling in the group.”

“You should also want to apologize because Kai’s your friend. And because Tabitha was being nice.”

Parker bats a hand. “Yeah, yeah.” He grabs my hand and pulls me over to Kai and Tabitha. “Tabby, I’m sorry I came off so harsh. It’s just that Kylie was really upset and I lost my cool.”

Tabitha swallows hard, nodding. “I get it. It’s cool. I just hated the idea of my mean girl rep spreading around the school again.” She smiles at me with kind eyes. “I was really sorry about how everything went down.”

I nod. “I know. It’s fine. It wasn’t just you.”

“So, we should get back to Lewis and Yvie,” Parker blurts, hanging a thumb over his shoulder. “They want to plan a double date with us.”

Surprise filters across Kai and Tabitha’s faces.

“Oh really,” Tabitha utters. “Did they already know about you two before today?”

Parker nudges me. “Yvie had her inklings, right babe? I can’t help myself in chem lab. I make any excuse to go over to their table.”

I smile, replying, “More than anything, Parker is one persistent guy.”

Parker and I distance ourselves, waiting for Yvette and Lewis to make their way back.

“Should we go to them?” I suggest.

“Yeah. I could say I need a craving filled because everyone ate my girlfriend’s cakes.”

An exhausted laugh pours out of me. Somehow, I’m less disturbed this time by him calling me his girlfriend.

One step away from the table, and the bell for the next period rings.

“It’s okay,” Parker says, patting my back. “We’ve still got chemistry class to get between them.”

“It’s so weird that we’ve organized a double date with them.”

Parker grins. “We’re one step closer to breaking them up.”

“Out of what, a million steps?”

“Have a little faith, Green.” He slings an arm around me, walking me out of the cafeteria. “What class do you have now?”

“English. You?”

“Social studies. I can walk you part of the way.”

“Okay. The charade continues.”
