The wind is knocked out of me.

Hand in hand, Lewis and Yvette walk between the aisle of lab desks.

“What the...” The words slip from Parker’s lips.

With her sleek white blonde hair, porcelain complexion, and pale pink, pouty lips, Yvette Anderson captivates the class. My eyes stay on Lewis. He can’t take his eyes off her as he proudly walks her to his workstation.

Lewis and Yvette stand by the desk as Parker stares at them with an open mouth. “Ah, what’s this?”

“Yvette needed some help with her chem notes, and we want to keep working on it together,” Lewis tells Parker. “Do you mind switching seats with her?”

Nervous laughter puffs out of Parker. “Are you serious?”

Yvette leans into Lewis, and my heart splinters into jagged pieces.

This can’t be happening.

Lewis and Yvette?

My Lewis?

She can literally have any guy at this school, and she has to take him?

Why is she doing this?

She’s ruining my life!

Mr. Thompson walks into class and notices Lewis and Yvette standing in the aisle. “What’s going on here?”

Lewis turns to him. “We were just hoping to change lab partners.”

“During the last week before spring break?” Mr. Thompson replies, ambling toward them. “I hardly think so.”

On cue, Parker and I let out sighs of relief.

When Lewis and Yvette give our teacher sad-puppy eyes, Mr. Thompson adds, “I’ll consider changes to lab partners after spring break. For now, please return to your assigned seats.”

Lewis gives Yvette an optimistic smile, and they part ways. There’s a gloominess to Yvette as she plonks down on the stool beside me.

I’ve never been so relieved for class to start. Mr. Thompson announces today’s lesson plan, and I hastily open my textbook. I swipe the pages, finding the right chapter. Deciphering graphs and diagrams would be a great distraction, if not for the sniveling and sighing coming from Yvette.

What’s her problem?

She held hands with the most beautiful boy in school. She can’t wait forty minutes to do it again?

The nerve of her!

With no self-discipline, I steal a glimpse at Lewis, and my stomach flips.

Somehow, Yvette has trapped him under her spell. But he’s better than this. He’s better than her. He can break free of her black magic and finally see clearly.

Finally see me, who’s always here waiting for him.

The corners of my mouth drag down, and I’m left feeling like a warped candle. I can’t shake the sense of loss, even when Parker turns my way.

“Whoa,” he murmurs.

I break away from staring at Lewis, and cower under Parker’s scrutiny.
