Eight

“Have you got everything, honey?” Mom calls out from the living room on Saturday morning.

My stomach jitters with nervousness, which has lingered since last night.

“Yeah, I think so,” I say, stuffing my beach towel into my tote bag.

I descend the stairs, almost missing a step when I’m hit with a dizzy spell.

I’m going to Logan’s Point with Lewis and his friends.

This isn’t a daydream.

This is real life.

I land on the first floor, renewed with giddiness.Eep! How’d I get this lucky?

I bite inside my lip, remembering the pretense of dating Parker. For now, I can ignore that part. I flick the ties of my blue bikini that run behind my neck and giggle. I can’t believe I’m actually wearing this and Lewis will see. What if he dumps Yvette today?

I giggle again and Mom meets me in the hallway.

“Well, you look happy this morning,” she says with delight. “Excited to see Parker again?”

So much for ignoring that part.

I swallow hard. “Something like that.”

“Did you pack the Tupperware container?”

I pat the tote bag. “I’ve got everything. Is it okay if I wait outside?”

A nervous laugh puffs out of Mom. “Did we embarrass you too much yesterday?”

Yes. “No, it’s just that Parker texted that he’s running late. I think he wants us to get in the car as soon as he pulls up.”

“Us?” Mom asks.

I gesture toward the house on the left. “Lewis from next door is coming with us. He’s probably waiting out front already.”

Mom nods. “Okay, you can wait with your friend.”
