He lets out a weighted sigh, and jokes, “Has Parker forgotten where we live?”

I laugh a little too hard, but who cares? Lewis Freaking Allen is talking to me.

I smooth the hair off the side of my face. “Ah, yeah. He must be taking the scenic route.”

“Maybe he’s lost on the way to Yvie’s house. He said he lived close to her, but they’re in different neighborhoods.”

My mouth runs dry. “Have you been to her house before?”

“She had a party a few months ago that me, Parker, and Tyler went to,” he replies. “Did you go to that?”

“Ah, no, I must’ve missed that one.”

“You didn’t miss much,” Lewis says, searching the road for Parker’s car. “She was still dating that deadbeat footballer. I ended up leaving early.”

“Oh, well, you could’ve come over to my house,” I say, instantly blushing. “I could’ve baked you something to boost your mood.”

He grins. “I’m sure that would’ve worked. You’re a wicked baker.” He eyes my tote bag. “Did you bring anything today?”

I pat the bag. “I never go anywhere unprepared. I always have snacks.”

Lewis’s laugh plays like music. “I’ll remember that and stick by you today.”

Eep! My heart bursts with giddiness. The stretch of my grin hurts, and it takes three attempts to get a word out. “Umm, yeah, that’ll be cool.”

“I bet Parker will have something to say about that.”

The tension in my smile eases. “Oh, yeah, maybe.”

“It’s so cool you two are together,” Lewis remarks. “Yvie won’t stop talking about our double date. I think she’s more excited about getting burgers than hanging out at the lake today.”

“I thought she didn’t like burgers.”

“It’s the four of us hanging out that has her excited.”

“Oh, okay. Cool.”

“You two have been getting close during chemistry, right?”

“Who? Me and Yvette?”

“Yeah. She said you two talk all the time.”

If you mean, she talksatme, then yes. “Mmm, yeah, I guess.”

“It’s awesome my best bud is dating someone my girlfriend gets along with.”

Oh boy. He thinks I’m friends with Yvette. How long do I need to play along? Surely once they’re broken up, he won’t want us hanging out with her. I just hope that doesn’t do anything to ruin his friendship with Parker.

Okay, maybe I can play nice with Yvette for the boys’ sake. Although, how my sanity will last is beyond me.

Finally, Parker’s car appears on our street and pulls in at the curb. My gut plummets as Lewis’s smile grows at the sight of Yvette through the car window. He pulls on the door handle, to help her out, but the door doesn’t budge.

“Huh?” Lewis mutters.

Yvette’s window lowers, and Parker leans across her to tell Lewis, “Get in the back.”

“What?” Lewis recoils. “Why’s the door locked?”
