“Geez, can you take it easy, Parker?” Lewis grumbles.

“Hey, I’m not the one who had his driving privileges taken away,” Parker teases.

Lewis straightens in his seat, frowning. “Ha, ha.”

Great. Now the silence is ten times more awkward.

I stare ahead, watching Parker fidget in his seat. He cranes his neck, and I notice him gaining my attention with the rearview mirror.

“Hey, did you bake anything for today?” he asks.

“Yep,” I reply. “I made snickerdoodles and red velvet cupcakes.”

“Oh, yum,” Yvette mumbles. “I hope they’re as good as what you brought to school yesterday.”

Lewis sits forward, smirking. “I already told Kylie I’m snagging them before you get to them, Parker.”

“Ha!” Parker sniggers. “If you can’t stop drooling over Kylie’s baking, maybe you picked the wrong girl.”

“Hey!” Yvette squeaks.

“I can appreciate how good Kylie’s snacks are without dating her,” Lewis says.

“Yeah, but if you want to be first in line, you should be her boyfriend,” Parker replies.

Oh, gosh. All the blood is rushing to my head.

“Umm.” Yvette flicks her hair off her shoulders as she leans over the center console to eye Parker. “He’s happy being my boyfriend.”

Parker’s teasing laugh sizzles out of him. “And do you bake, Yvie?”

She sits back. “No. I have other talents.”

Parker can’t help himself. “How come Lewis doesn’t talk about them as much as he does Kylie’s baking?”

What is he doing? Why is he antagonizing her so much?

“Unlike you, Parker,” Lewis interjects, “I can compliment both girls.”

“What are you trying to say?” Parker asks, shifting in his seat. “You think you can make both girls happy?”

“Probably with a lot less effort than you.”

“What do you say, Yvie?” Parker says, the fun coming back in his tone. “Is it good to know that your boyfriend’s contemplating making another girl happy?”

Yvie retches, crossing her arms. “Ah, no.”

Lewis leans forward to touch Yvette’s arm. “That’s not what I meant.”

“And what do you think, Kylie?” Parker asks, tilting his head at the rearview mirror. “Would you want to share a boyfriend?”

With irritation at his friend filling his expression, Lewis’s stare lands on me.

Fear and embarrassment inflames my face. I raise my hands to cover, but there’s a tremble in my fingers. When Yvette turns to look at me, another wave of humiliation crashes over me.

“Kylie?” Parker asks, moving to view the mirror again.

I rotate to face the car door, overwhelmed by everyone’s attention. Oh my gosh. They’re not gonna stop until I give an answer. I gotta come up with something fast.
