I don’t really know what their friend group gets up to outside of school. Sometimes, I get a glimpse, because they hang out at the café where I work. And oftentimes, they make their way to the local skatepark. It’s always awkward to act like I’m not staring or eavesdropping on them.

Speaking of awkward, I shimmy past Parker’s car as the boys chat. I keep my head down as Lewis gets out of the car. As I step onto the path, leading to my front door, I hear the name “Yvette” mentioned.

I can’t help myself.

I turn and peer over my shoulder, focusing on the car.

Lewis smirks as he closes the door, and then waves and walks to his door. I don’t know why, but my eyes stay glued to the car door. Particularly, the face looking out.

Parker’s eyes transfix mine. His brow lowers, as if he’s calculating something.

When heat prickles my face, I swiftly turn away and move toward my front door. As I fumble with my keys, Parker’s car reverses onto the street. I exhale hard as I hear it drive away.

“Hey honey, how was school?” Mom calls from the living room.

“Fine,” I mumble, kicking off my shoes.

She makes her way into the entrance way, tilting her head with concern. “I know that tone.”

I drop my backpack and shake my head. “No, really, I’m fine. Just thinking over a math problem that has me stumped.”

Mom’s lips press into a line, not buying it. “Hmm. Okay. You’re sure everything’s fine?”

I deflate my chest and let my shoulders relax. “Yes, especially because I’m home now.”

Mom smiles. “Okay, honey.”

I pick up my bag and take it upstairs with me. It is true. Now that I’m home, nothing can hurt me. There’s no rumors about Yvette. No sniffling Yvette sitting by my side. Or, no Yvette sitting across the room and kissing my dream guy.

I move into my room and walk to the window. I lean against the windowsill and fixate on the desk in his bedroom. My veins electrify when Lewis walks into view. I bite into my lip, anticipating what he might do next.

He smiles and sweet dimples indent his cheeks. As he laughs, I notice the phone held to his ear, and take in his nervous body language.

Is he...

Is he talking toher?

I swallow the influx of saliva pooling in my mouth.

Please, let it be anyone but her.

He continues to laugh, scrunches a hand through his hair, and paces his desk.

Oh my gosh. I’m done for.

Any time I’ve watched him on the phone, he’s calm and cool.

Oh my gosh. What if he invites her over?

Then everything really will be ruined.

There will be no fantasizing about us being in each other’s houses because Yvette will be marking her territory. Right now, home is the only place I have left that’s safe from her.

I can’t watch her paw at him here.

I just can’t.

Beep, beep. Beep, beep. Beep, beep.
