Thirteen

Whenever I work a Sundaymorning shift at the café, I’m usually excited at the prospect of seeing Lewis. It’s the highlight of a day that also includes early morning baking.

But today, all I feel is dread.

Last night was a disaster. Yvette was at her worst, and every chance I got to build on something with Lewis, it was destroyed.

Ugh, and I kissed Parker again.

I’ve really got to stop doing that.

I yawned my way through this morning’s setup. Overnight, I was lucky to get a wink of sleep. I tossed and turned, imagining Yvette’s shrill laughter echoing throughout the café. Whenever my mind replays last night’s date, I jolt with shudders.

“Are you okay?” Jamie asks, readying the milkshake machines.

I wipe under my eye. “Just tired.”

“Was yesterday at the lake more exercise than you usually do in a day?”

I frown. “Yes, actually. Plus we went out to dinner last night.”

“Who’s we?”

“Parker, Lewis, Yvette, and me.”

“Wow.” Her eyes widen. “You guys are inseparable.”

It’s hard to hide the dissatisfaction from my face. “Mmm.”

“Are you and Yvette actually becoming friends?”

I blow out a breath. “For the boys’ sake, I’m trying.”

Jamie nods as if a lightbulb’s flashed inside her mind. “Ah, okay.”

“She’s coming here today.”

Jamie almost snaps the jug against the base of the milkshake machine. “What was that?”

“Lewis is bringing her here.”

“Yvette is coming to my café?” she says, growing red. “Why do these girls keep coming here? They’re supposed to stay at Village Coffee.”

“Can you seat them in your section?”

Jamie scoffs. “No way.”

“They’re coming with Kai and Tabitha.”
