“Oh yeah. The bonds of…long hours and dangerous situations can really form the strongest…bonds.”

I suppose it made sense, but I wasn’t sure how dangerous constructionwas in this day and age. “Do they climb really high or something?”

“Something like that,” she nodded. “And…you know, the nail guns can be really deadly. You know, if you were to point them at someone.”

“I suppose,” I said slowly.

It was Anna who jumped in next, “And the explosives. They’re used all the time on the job. That’s where IRIS comes in. He has to know how to handle them so no one gets hurt. It takes a lot of trust.”

“A lot,” Juliette agreed.

“Who is IRIS?” I asked. This whole thing was getting weirder by the second.

“Oh, he’s the demolition specialist,” Anna piped up. “He handles all the…blowing up…of things.”

“And sometimes the dismantling,” Juliette cut in.

“Right, because sometimes you want to blow something up and then…you realize the owner changed his mind and…doesn’t want to blow something up.”

Juliette snapped her fingers, nodding along. “Right, and you need someone who can go in and handle the explosives without risking everyone else’s lives.”

“Wow,” I said, my eyebrows hitching up in surprise. “I guess…I didn’t realize it was so demanding working in construction.”

“Oh, definitely,” Juliette nodded, taking a drink again. “It’s a rough world.”

I felt like all I was doing at this lunch was bobbing my head up and down as they told me the wildest stories. For some reason, something wasn’t sitting right with me, but I wasn’t sure what at this point. The ladies seemed so nice, but it was like they were only telling me a hint of the truth.

“Well, I’m sure Dash is at the center of the chaos. He seems so crazy.”

“Oh, definitely,” Anna snorted. “He has this insane rivalry with Rae.”

“About what?”

“Who’s the best,” Anna retorted, giving a knowing look. “They’reconstantly trying to one-up the other. Like this one time, they were stuck in a cell in the mountains?—”

“A cell?”

Her face went red and she quickly backtracked. “Well, it was like a cell. Really, Rae was stuck in a…bathroom!”

“Right, it was a bathroom,” Juliette nodded. “With Cash and FNG.”

“FNG?”

“Fucking new guy. It’s a…construction term.”

“For the new guy,” I surmised.

“Exactly,” Anna smiled. “Anyway, Rae was…locked in this bathroom and Dash had to get her out remotely because…um…the key wouldn’t work.”

“How do you open a bathroom door remotely?”

They both looked at each other again, but it was Juliette who answered. “It was a high-tech bathroom. For billionaires.”

“I bet that guy changed his mind on the electronic locks,” I giggled. “Can you imagine being locked in your own bathroom?”

“Right?” Anna said, shifting in her seat.

“So, what happened? What was the rivalry?”
