I cringed at the question. “Not really.”

“A woman came to see you in the hospital. You’re obviously desperately in love with her. This is themoment.”

“The moment where I get my heart crushed?”

“No, you idiot. The moment where she sees you in this bed, injured and hurting, and fawns over you to make sure you’re alright.”

“She does?” I asked, totally confused by her line of thinking. “But she doesn’t like me like that.”

She shook her head in frustration, going back to her computer. “If you don’t know, then you don’t deserve to know.”

I wasn’t sure what that meant, but it didn’t sound very good. After the nurse left, the doctor came in, examining my wound. Luckily, it was a through and through, but that didn’t mean it wasn’t in need of some patching up.

He was just tearing open my pants when Laura came rushing into the area, tearing open the curtain. Her eyes were filled with tears as she stared down at me in horror.

“They said you were shot, but I didn’t believe them! You work construction. How is this possible? Was it the owner? Was he angry?”

I opened my mouth to correct her, but then remembered I hadn’t told her the truth yet. And it probably looked a tad weird that I was dressed in tactical clothes, but she hadn’t said anything yet, so I hoped that could slide.

But then IRIS walked in behind her with a grin on his face. “See? I told you it would be fine. My shot is true.”

Laura spun on him, pushing him back a step. “You shot him?”

This was unraveling fast, and I needed to stop it before she found out the truth. “With a nail gun!” I shouted.

She spun back to me, her eyes zeroed in on me like lasers. This was not good. “Why would he shoot you with a nail gun?”

Sweat broke out along the back of my neck, seeping down my spine. This was bad. Really, really fucking bad. “Uh…”

“Because he was about to fall,” IRIS stepped in.

Again, Laura swiveled to face him. “You shot him because he was about to fall? What kind of idiot do you take me for?”

“No, it’s a real thing,” I rushed on, trying to save this somehow. “I…was falling…off a board…high up and…didn’t have my harness on.”

“So, he shot you so you’d fall harder?” Laura asked incredulously.

“It was to counter the momentum of his fall,” IRIS said smoothly. “By shooting him, he fell the opposite way, landing on the roof instead of plummeting to his death ten stories below. It was an ingenious move, if I do say so myself.” IRIS grinned at her, like he was the hero of this story. If only she knew the truth.

As for the doctor, he huffed, not saying a word as he continued to clean me up. It wasn’t until he shoved a pair of tweezers into the wound that I yelped, nearly jumping out of my bed.

“Sorry, must have been a wood splinter…from the board you were standing on,” the doctor lied with a grin on his face.

Laura rushed around to my side, gripping my hand tight. Feelings of lust and…other equally dangerous feelings rushed through me at the wrong time. I had to shift in bed to hide the growing erection under the blanket. Was there ever a time she’d be in my presence and I wouldn’t get a massive hard on?

“What does he need to do?” Laura asked the doctor.

“Rest. Take his antibiotics. And it wouldn’t hurt to have someone looking out for him. Are you able to?—”

“I’m staying with him,” she rushed on. “I’ll make sure he does everything you prescribe.”

I groaned, dropping my head against the pillow. This was going to be torture. At least if I could go to work, I could escape her and pretend my dick didn’t want to attack her every second of the day.

“Hey, I’ll make it lots of fun. We can lay in bed and watch movies all day long. With popcorn.”

IRIS smirked at me from the doorway. He knew exactly the kind of torture I was about to endure, and the fucker was laughing at me.

She wrapped her arms around my neck and nuzzled my neck. “I’ll be the best nurse you’ve ever had.”
