I walk in with my duffle bag slung over my shoulder and head straight for the back.

A few of the regulars shoot me a smile.

I’m happy I’ll be dancing for them tonight.

A voice calls out, cutting through the bass. “Oak!”

I glance around for a moment until my eyes land on a familiar face.

Sparky.

He’s one of the bouncers and a good dude.

I walk over to him and give him a big hug. “I’m so glad you’re back. I thought you were gonna be out for a few weeks?”

He shrugs. “Was supposed to, but my sister found someone else to help her out, so here I am.”

I smile brightly. “Awesome. I’m glad everything worked out for you. It was weird dancing in here and not seeing you guarding us.”

He chuckles and drags his soft green eyes up and down my body. “I didn’t think you’d miss me so much. So, you gonna let me take you out one day, or what?”

Sparky is a good-looking white dude. He’s built, but he’s not overly muscular.

I don’t want to ever go on dates with someone I work with because the only thing it’ll get is messy.

I cock my head to the side a bit. “Sparky, you know I don’t date people I work with.”

Ebony’s voice rings out, “Oak, come on!”

“Shit, gotta go!” I quickly tell him as I make my way back to the dressing room.

I change into my outfit, a skimpy magenta set that leaves little to the imagination.

I give myself a once over, making sure I look as confident as ever.

Staring back at myself, I look into my deep chocolate eyes and wonder how in the fuck I ever let myself get so broken.

I shake my head, and the music begins to fade out, which means it’s almost time for me to hit the stage.

I head out of the dressing room and walk up to the side, waiting for Ebony to come back.

She walks in with her top off, holding a ton of bills.

As she walks by, she grins widely. “They’re feeling generous tonight, girl.”

Her comment gives me the boost I need as I step out on stage.

The music envelops me, acting as a comforting embrace.

I dance, my body moving in sync with the beat.

With every sway of my body around the pole, my mind becomes numb to the world around me.

I lose myself in the atmosphere, becoming the woman these men have come to see: Oak.

Oak doesn’t have any problems.

She’s a sexy, confident woman who only smiles and gets loads of cash.
