I forgot how comforting it is to have a woman clinging onto you at night.

Glancing over, I admire Oakleigh as her braids fan out over my arm, looking like a damn goddess.

She closes her eyes, taking in sweet, calming breaths.

"Razor," Oakleigh murmurs lightly, opening her dark chocolate eyes to meet my gaze. "Thank you again for helping me earlier at the club. You didn't have to do all that."

I run my fingertips softly against her cheek. "I don't need to be thanked, Cola. I'm just glad I was there for you."

She smiles softly, her eyes reflecting the thankfulness she just expressed. "You're different than others who have . . . become infatuated with me, you know? You actually care."

"Damn right, I do, and I don’t care about any of the fuckers who were into you before. They’re not here, so they’re not competition." I trace the curve of her hip, loving the milky softness of her skin. "I’m never going to let anything happen to you.”

Oakleigh bites her lip, her eyes flickering with uncertainty. "I don’t know why you care so much. I’m not special,” she laughs sadly.

"That’s where you’re wrong," I tell her firmly. She doesn’t see the potential I know she has. "You are the most unique woman I’ve ever come across, and I say that honestly.”

A tear slips down her cheek, and I gently wipe it away with my thumb. "I’ve never had anyone say something like that to me before.” she admits, her voice trembling with emotion.

"Get used to it," I reply softly, “Because I’ll always be here to remind you.”

Then it hits me.

I won’t always be here to remind her about anything.

I’m leaving for Mexico, and that means leaving Oakleigh behind too.

A pang of guilt twists deep in my gut.

I can’t deny something’s shifting between us. We’re forming some sort of bond.

In a way, I believe it’s one forged in pain and vulnerability.

She doesn’t know much about my past with drugs, but one day I’ll tell her.

I don’t want the drugs to take over her entire life, and she’s well on the way to having it happen.

If she’s not careful, she’ll succumb to her addiction, not stand up to it.

All she’s looking for is an escape, and I know it, but sometimes in life we have to face the cruel realities we’re dealing with.

We sit here in silence for a few moments, both enjoying one another’s company.

I trace patterns with my fingers along her arm, enjoying the warmth of her body.

I know I have to remind her, and even though I’m not trying to kill the mood, I have to bring it up.

I clear my throat lightly, “You know I’m leavin’ soon.”

Oakleigh tilts her head up to look at me, her typically warm eyes suddenly cold. "I know.”

I suck in a slow, deep breath. "Staying here was only a temporary thing.”

Her eyebrows furrow, and she bites her lip, trying to muffle the disappointment I’m forcing upon her.

Despite her best efforts, I notice the subtle shifts in her body language.

She tenses up ever so slightly. “I know, you came to LA for business, and since that’s wrapped up you’re heading back home.”
