“What happened there?” He asked as he gently stroked the reddened skin with his fingertips.

He delicate touch aroused me more than it should in this situation. Yet again, he was taking care of me when I was hurt. It was the second time I watched as he cleaned my cuts.

“It’s where I hit the post in the middle of the zebra crossing.”

“You’re damn lucky Adaline, who know what would have happened if you were on your bike and there was no protection,” he growled.

I wondered for a moment if he was angry with me.

“Come here, Adaline,” Callum said and stood in between my open legs. He brought me into a cuddle, wrapping his arms around me, stroking my back. I turned my head and rested it on his shoulder, smelling his clean washing scent. My hands were on my lap, I didn’t have the energy to lift my arms to cuddle him back. Instead, I snuggled my body closer to his and lifted my legs to wrap them around his hips. He stepped closer, pulling my hips flush with his. My hands grabbed his waistband to keep him close. “You’re safe now, you’re ok,” he soothed into my ear. I finished sniffling and lifted my head. We were nose to nose, his eyes clear as day, showing his concern. I tilted my head and waited, his warm breath tickled my lips. We were too close for me to glance at his lips to see if he licked them like I was licking mine. I moistened my bottom lip once more and kissed him, clutching at his waistband when he responded.

I knew I shouldn’thave kissed him. He was my tenant, and I was his landlady, but I couldn’t stop. As soon as our tongues touched I was lost in the sea of lust. My fingers grazed the bare skin below his waistband. He clawed at my waist under my t-shirt bringing me close to his body, the slow movement of his pelvis. The slight sway, unnoticeable to anyone watching but my thighs felt a slight movement. Callum’s erection couldn’t be ignored and neither could my heavy breathing. Moving my hands to the back of his neck and opening my mouth wider brought me closer, but it still felt too far away.

We could not have sex, if we slept together, I know I would be addicted to him. If he found out about my hearing and then walked away, I would be heartbroken. And hungry.

“I’m sorry,” I said as I broke the kiss. Dropping my head back to the cupboard behind me, I eyed him cautiously. “I needed to kiss you, I can’t explain it.”

“You don’t have to apologise or justify kissing me, you can kiss me anytime you want. In fact-”

He leant in and kissed me again. He tasted of coffee and sinful desire. I let him kiss me for a few more minutes until I was teetering on the verge of stripping him naked. Dropping my legs, my heels hit the cupboard door and bounced a few times. I pulled his hand from my left hip and placed it on the counter top while I nipped at his bottom lip.

“That hurts,” I said.

He pulled away from me like a shot and leant against the washing machine opposite me.

“I’m so sorry, what was I thinking?” He said and brushed the stubble on his head with his palm. I got the impression when he was under pressure he would run his fingers through his hair.

“It’s my fault, I shouldn’t have kissed you.”

I shifted off the counter and dropped to the floor. As soon as my feet hit the floor, my knees buckled. Callum caught me by the waist and held me until I was steady. Holding onto his forearms, I squeezed his muscles while I contemplated my next move. Did I kiss him again or hobble back to my flat and lick my wounds?

“I’m ok now, you can let me go,” I said and tried to take a side step, but he didn’t release me.

Lifting my chin to get me to look at him, I didn’t resist.

“If I thought you’d let me, I’d never let you go,” he said and took my elbow in his hand and guided me to my veranda doors. I unlocked the door and hobbled in.

I didn’t know how to respond, I didn’t want to be let go by Callum. Scottie’s words came back to me, I wasn’t convinced that he would want me once he knew.

“You’ll have to do without me soon. I might have to go to Hong Kong.”

“When?”

I dropped my handbag on the nearest open spot on my living room floor, buying time.

“Soon.”

“Will you be here to cheer me on for the triathlon? I need you there,” he said, his eyebrows knotting in a frown.

“Of course. The trip is not imminent, but if my seller doesn’t give in to my negotiations, then I must go out there and get the comic in person.”

“What do you mean, what negotiations?”

“My big payday depends on this seller, he lives in Hong Kong and is reluctant to courier the comic over to the UK. He doesn’t trust it will arrive safely. I’m trying to negotiate with him a reliable courier to transport the comic, but he is arguing that no one will be as reliable as me. He wants to meet face to face.”

“He sounds suspect to me, how do you know he has the comic in the first place?”

We were still standing, and my leg was aching, I wished I started this conversation while I was sitting on the countertop with his arms wrapped around me. I walked away from him and headed for the bathroom, he followed. I started the water running and added the bath foam, four times as much as I should put in, but I wanted bubbles up to my neck.
