Right on the dot, June pushes the doors to Hiker’s Haven open. Her coming here after work is still part of her daily routine. She waves at Rosie, then frowns as she sees me sitting at the counter.

She walks over to me and presses her lips against mine. “Benson? I didn’t know you would be here, but it’s an amazing surprise.”

“Had a good day at work?” I ask.

“The last one of the school year. Next term, Lily will be in my class. I can’t wait,” she says with a big smile.

I clear my throat. “And I can’t wait to call you something other than my girlfriend.”

She throws me a panicked look. “What do you mean?”

I put my hand on hers to ease her. “It’s okay.”

I stand and turn to face the booths. “Um, can I have everyone’s attention? I have a very special question to ask the most important woman in the world. To me, at least. I’d like everyone to witness this moment as an account of our love.”

My gaze flits to Sloane for a second. She helps Lily out of the booth. That’s my cue to get down on one knee.

“Benson!” June’s hand flies to her mouth, tears pooling in her eyes.

Lily joins me at my side. I pull out the box containing a diamond ring, and Lily holds out a rose for June.

“June, I love you and want to spend the rest of my days with you, so… Lily and I want to ask you something.”

“Yes, we have a question for you. And this rose is also for you,” Lily says.

June takes the rose and wipes away the tears of happiness with the palm of her hand. “Okay. Ask away.”

“Will you join our little family and marry me, sweet June?”

“Yes. Yes, I want to marry you.”

She chokes out the words, then falls into my arms. She scoops Lily up in her embrace, and everyone cheers. We stay like that for a few moments, savoring every second.

“Congratulations! I’m so stoked you’re going to be my sister-in-law,” Sloane says.

Maverick gives me a fist bump. “Well done, mate. I’m happy for you two.”

Then Rosie cuts in and hugs June. “Girl, what a ring! Congrats!”

“You’re next, I’m sure of it,” June says.

Rosie laughs. “Does that mean you know more than I do? Because I’m still single.”

June smiles and intertwines her fingers with mine. “You never know when you’ll meet the man of your dreams. Things can move fast.”

I pull her closer and kiss her. I don’t care that we have an audience.

“Thank you, Benson. Every single day, you make me the happiest woman alive. I love you.”

“And you make me the happiest man on the planet.”

She grins. “I guess we’re even then.”

“Absolutely.”
