I nod.

His eyes widen before he whistles and sets his mug down. “How the hell did that happen?”

“I don’t know. I mean, I think I’ve always had feelings for her, but I always thought she hated me. I never imagined that might change. But then one thing led to another and . . .” I shrug.

“Are you just fucking or actually dating?”

I curse under my breath. “Seriously?”

“What?” He shrugs. “I think it’s a fair question, all things considered.”

In other words, considering the fact I’m notorious for not seeing a chick more than once.

“I care about her, man. Like really care about her. And I’m pretty sure she feels the same.”

“Oh,shit.” Knox bellows. “You’re falling for her, aren’t you?”

I glare at him, saying nothing, which only makes him tip his head back in hysterics.

Maybe this was a mistake.

“I’m glad you think this is funny, dude.”

“Teagan’s gonna kill you,” he says between gasps for air.

“You think I don’t know that?” I hiss. “That’s why we’re here.” I wave between us with a jerk of the hand. “And I washopingfor some advice.”

Knox sobers and shakes his head, his lips pinched. “Are you absolutely sure about her, man? I mean, there’s no chance this is gonna fizzle out in a few weeks?”

I swallow, toying with my silverware. “Not on my end, no.”

Knox blows out a breath as he stares at me. “Obviously you gotta tell him, man-to-man. He’ll never respect you if you don’t.”

“That was my thought, too. We were gonna wait till after the fall season, you know, just so he’s not distracted or worrying about her, but I was at their place yesterday and I think he’s suspicious something’s up. It got me wondering if maybe we shouldn’t wait. If maybe we should come clean now.”

“He’s gonna be pissed either way. If you wait, he might be angrier that you lied for so long, but there’s also the chance you might not have to tell him at all if things don’t work out.”

I grimace. As much as I hate hearing it, it’s not like Brynn and I haven’t said the same thing, but I hate the thought we might not work. “Right. That’s what Brynn and I thought, too.”

“And if you tell him before everyone goes back to school and he’s not over it, then it’ll fuck with your seasonandhis.”

I cross my arms over my chest. It sure as shit would mess with my game if my best friend wasn’t talking to me. Not to mention the turmoil that kind of tension would cause for Brynn, so I know it would fuck with his, too. “Yeah, I agree. So, you think we’re right for waiting?”

Knox nods. “Definitely.”

“Then why does it feel like I have a fucking bowling ball sitting on my chest?”

Knox scoffs, avoiding my gaze, and I wonder if he’s placating me. Maybe he thinks I’m a shitty friend. “Man, any time you have a secret this big which you’re keeping from your brothers, it’s bound to hurt.”

The waitress delivers our food as his words settle in my gut like nails.

Seemingly unfazed, Knox picks up his fork and starts to dig in. “Either way, tonight is gonna be interesting. Damn bro, I’d hate to be in your shoes.”

BRYNN

I haven’t seen Jace since I left him in bed this morning, and if this is what withdrawal from my favorite human feels like, I hate it. Even spending time with Teagan today, who up until this point used to be my favorite person, didn’t ease the feeling.

After breakfast, Jace texted me and let me know he’d meet me at the party tonight, which was fine by me. If last night taught us anything, it was that pretending to be something we’re not is harder than either of us thought it would be, so I’m in no rush to repeat the show.
