We sit around a table at Roasted like old times, clutching cups of coffee in our hands. Only, instead of shooting the breeze and catching up, our conversation takes on a more ominous tone, and where there used to be five of us, there are only four.

“Wow.” Graham stares into the abyss as everything Teagan and I just told them sinks in.

Though they gathered the gist of what happened at the Nichols’ residence, we knew they wanted answers, so with Brynn’s approval, Teagan and I asked Graham and Atlas to join us for coffee. It’s the first time we’ve seen them since the barbeque, and even though I wish our time spent together didn’t have to be so heavy, I couldn’t have asked for better friends.

“Fuck. You think you know someone . . .” Atlas trails off and we all nod in agreement.

Lifting his head, Graham asks, “You guys okay?”

Teagan and I glance at each other. “Yeah, we’re good,” I say.

“And Brynn, she’s . . . coping?”

“Brynn’s strong.” Of that, I’m sure.

“Luckily, she has this guy here, too,” Teagan says, slapping a hand over my shoulder.

“Fuck, who would’ve thought you two would become an item?” Graham asks, and we all laugh, needing the levity.

“Not me.” I smirk.

“Not Brynn, either. That’s some real hate-to-love shit right there,” Atlas says, and we burst out laughing again.

“What can I say?” I shrug, turning to Teagan. “Your sister’s irresistible.”

Teagan groans. “You’re such a fucking sap now.”

“Yeah, wasn’t it you just a little over two months ago telling us, and I quote, ‘if Ieverget this whipped over a woman, someone please put me out of my misery’?” Graham snickers.

“Should we do you in now or later?” Atlas asks, deadpan.

“Hey, I’m not whipped.”Yet.

Teagan arches a brow. “Okay, dude.”

“I’m not,” I protest a little too hard.

“You should see these two together. They’re so mushy it makes me sick,” Teagan says.

“Based on his littleBridget Jones’s Diarydisplay in the backyard the other day, we’re inclined to believe you,” Graham says, and I flip him the bird.

“Hey, they don’t call it a fucking grand gesture for nothing.”

Teagan laughs. “Whatever. I just can’t wait until you two and all your PDA are back in Michigan so I don’t have to see it anymore.”

“Jealous?” I smirk. “After all, you’re the only single dope left.”

“Ah, may I remind you, before Brynn, these guys were the dopey ones,” he says, waving a hand toward Atlas and Graham who watch on with equally amused expressions. “And now,I’mthe dope?”

I shrug. “You said it, not me.”

Teagan snorts. “Yeah, well, just remember what Brynn’s like when she’s pissed. Because your first fight is coming, and then follows the inevitable groveling.”

I frown. “Didn’t we just have our first fight?”

“No,” Atlas and Graham say at the same time.

“Whatever. A fight just means make-up sex.”
