Jace moves in front of Stanley, his large body dwarfing him and blocking him entirely, like the moon eclipsing the sun. All that’s left of my date are the curses I can hear behind Jace as his eyes find mine. “You don’t even know him. And you have next to zero experience with alcohol, unless I’m mistaken. Don’t you think it would be prudent to keep a clear head?”

“Prudent?”I snort and take a step closer.

What I hate more than Jace sticking his nose where it doesn’t belong is the fact that he’s right. But I’d rather die than admit that. So, instead I move until we’re standing toe-to-toe, until my chin tips so our eyes meet, and I whisper, “Well then, aren’t I lucky I have you here to protect me.”

Then I sidestep him and grab Stanley’s hand, dragging him onto the dance floor.

CHAPTER 5

JACE

The beat of themusic ricochets through me like a gunshot, piercing everything inside. Or maybe it’s just Brynn having this effect on my insides. Normally, I’d be on the dance floor, grinding behind some nameless co-ed with a tight ass and a penchant for emotionally unavailable men. Instead, I’m standing just outside the mass of people barely moving under the strobing lights, half pissed while I risk glances at Brynn. She’s currently sipping a fresh beverage to replace the one I stole, and making her way onto the dance floor for the second time with Douche Dick Stanley.

“Dude, you into her or something?”

“What?” My head snaps toward Chris who showed up a little while ago with a few of the guys from the team.

“Brynn. You said she was your best friend’s sister, right?”

In other words, she’s off-limits.

“Yeah, so?”

Chris quirks a brow and glances toward Brynn, then back. “I know I’ve only known you for a week, but the way you’re eyeing her . . .”

I roll my eyes. The guy is seeing things.

“It’s not like that. She’s just super innocent and I’m worried she’s in over her head.” I shrug. “I don’t want to see her get into any trouble.”

Chris nods, and when his gaze shifts to something over my shoulder and his brows rise, it takes everything in me not to take a look for myself.

I can do this. I can be strong.

“I get that. So, her grinding on someone won’t faze you?”

I glance over my shoulder so fast I get whiplash.

My heart pounds against my ribs as I watch Brynn move to the music. Hips swaying. Arms in the air. But she’s facing him, not grinding on Stanley like Chris suggested, and it takes me a moment to realize what he did.

I turn back to find him laughing his ass off and flip him the bird, making a mental note to add laxative to his protein shakes.

“Sorry, man. I had to.” He raises his hands and takes a step back at the same time a tall blonde with long, curly hair and her redheaded friend approach us.

The blonde points at me. “Hey, aren’t you in my Humanities class?”

My gaze tracks over her face, but I draw a blank. My mind is too preoccupied, too concerned with what’s going on behind me in the minute since I last checked on Brynn, so I simply agree. “Yeah, sure.”

“You play football, right?” The blonde smiles.

I nod, annoyed with myself because instead of being invested in this hot chick, all I want to do is turn my head to the blonde behind me. “Yep. We both do, actually,” I say with a nod toward Chris. “This is my roommate, Chris, one of AU’s running backs.”

“Hey.” Chris offers them a nod, then turns his attention solely to the redhead, and if the gleam in his eye is any indication, he’s going to be preoccupied later.

“And what position do you play?” the blonde asks with a flutter of her lashes.

“Wide receiver.” I angle my body so I can keep an eye on the dance floor.

“That’s the guy who catches the ball, right?”
