My stomach churns at the picture she paints.

“Whoa.” I hold my hands out, and I’m about to ask if she thoughtabout heading to the back seat of his car when she takes a step closer, stealing my breath.

“So it’s okay for you to have that blonde bimbo rub herself all over you and practically swallow your tongue, but I can’t do the same? Did you even know that girl before tonight? Because I’ve been talking to Stanley all week. I, at least, knowsomethingabout him.”

“Yeah, well, you’re better than me.” I shrug, like that point should be obvious.

A disgruntled sound rumbles from the back of her throat as she shakes her head, her tone resigned as she says, “Whatever. I’m done. Congratulations, Jace. You got what you wanted. I’m leaving. Alone.”

I watch her walk away from me, unable to take my eyes off the sway of her hips before common sense prevails, and I remember she came with Charlotte and doesn’t have a car.

I jog to catch up with her. “How are you getting home?” I ask.

“I’m walking.”

“Alone?” I arch a brow.

“It’s one block, Jace. I’ll be fine.”

“Like hell you will. I’m driving you.”

She pauses at the door, turning to stare at me, and I can practically see her thoughts churning. She wants to argue. Refuse. But she won’t. I’m banking on it.

I know I’m right when she sighs and her shoulders slouch. “Do I have a choice?”

“What do you think?” I ask with a grin.

She relents, dragging her feet as I guide her to my car. I open the passenger door for her before rounding to the driver’s side.

“Why’d you drive, anyway?” she asks as the engine rumbles to life and I pull away from the curb.

“I knew I wouldn’t be drinking, so I figured I might as well.”

She says nothing to that, and I find myself wishing she’d talk to me. Maybe insult me or bite my head off. I’d take anything other than her answering silence.

When I can’t take it anymore, I glance over at her to find she’s staring out the window, seemingly lost in thought. I open my mouth to say something—I’m not sure what, maybe apologize—but at the last second, I snap it shut. Better to leave well enough alone. It’s not like I’d go back and change anything. I’d do it all the same, so an apology would be disingenuous.

I focus back on the road, and when I pull up to the dorms a few minutes later, her hand is already on the handle in a rush to get away from me.

“Want me to walk you in?” I ask.

“Nope.” She makes eye contact with me for a few brief seconds before she swings her door open. “I think you’ve done enough damage for the night.”

“Sweet dreams, Nichols,” I yell after her as she slams the door shut in my face, then flips me the bird.

“Hope you have fucking nightmares,” she singsongs.

I tip my head back and laugh.

CHAPTER 6

BRYNN

Isit in theheat of the afternoon sun, enjoying the feel of it on my skin as I wait impatiently for my brother to answer his phone. I know for a fact he’s finished practice already. I know because he posted a sweaty selfie of himself on social media only an hour ago. He’s lucky I didn’t wake him at five this morning, since I was up, brooding over my failure of a date last night and unable to fall back asleep.

After the third try, he finally picks up, his voice smooth like silk croons, “Brynn? To what do I owe the pleasure?”

“You need to call your dogs off. And by dogs, I mean Jace,” I say, wasting no time getting to the point
