“Get out of my way.”

Chris shakes his head. “We’re not letting you do this man.”

“You heard what he said,” I growl, waving a hand toward the backyard. “He has it coming.”

“So what if he does? You need to take a minute and let the dust settle. At least talk to Brynn first before you do anything rash. Maybe I’m wrong, but the little I’ve seen of her tells me she’s not the type of person who allows other people to fight her battles. The best way to get back at that asshole is to ruin whatever he has with her because he couldn’t shut his mouth.”

My gaze flickers behind them, toward the backyard where I know he’s likely running his mouth, and the muscle in my jaw twitches.

They’re wrong. He deserves to eat my fist.

“Look, if you rest on it and you still wanna kick his ass, I’ll personally accompany you,” Damon says.

I inhale, holding the breath in my lungs until it burns before I release it.

I hate it when I’m wrong, but I’m usually able to admit it, and now is no exception. Kicking Stanley’s ass, though gratifying, will accomplish nothing. It’ll only jeopardize my spot on the team, and if anything, it’ll piss Brynn off and make her hate me even more than she already does.

With a sigh, I place my hands on my hips and nod as I stare at my new friends—my teammates—grateful as hell they have my back. Because they’re right. Stanley isn’t worth screwing up my future.

Regardless, I need to talk to Brynn.

CHAPTER 9

BRYNN

Ilounge back onCharlotte’s bed, wedged between her and the wall as I sip from my vodka seltzer. Several girls from down the hall have joined us, and at the moment, Samantha is regaling us with stories about her boyfriend. Now her ex.

“. . . so I finally dumped his ass, and I’m not sorry for it.”

“Ugh. Why are good guys so hard to find?” Charlotte complains.

“You got me. I wasted a year on Bryce.”

“Screw boys,” Charlotte says, raising her seltzer in the air. “Here’s to a new year, new school, and being single until we find someone worth our fucking time.”

“I’ll second that.” I clink my can to hers.

“Things not going well with Stanley?” she asks, taking a sip of her drink. “I thought you two were hitting it off?”

I pull a face. “Eh, I don’t know. I mean, he’s super cute, and he seems interested enough, but . . . something about him rubbed me the wrong way last week when we had coffee. He’s stillflirting with me before class, but something’s telling me to keep my distance. Then again, maybe I’m nitpicking? I don’t know what to think.”

“Girl, if you see red flags now, run. Don’t walk,” Samantha says, taking another slice of pepperoni from the box resting on the end of Charlotte’s bed.

The others chorus their agreement when Samantha perks up and holds a finger in the air. “Unless . . .” She finishes chewing and swallows, then adds, “Stanley is the smoking hot guy I’ve seen come to your room a couple times.”

I frown and shake my head because Stanley’s never been to my room. The only boy who’s been to my room is . . . My eyes widen at the same time Charlotte snorts out a laugh and asks, “You mean the ripped one with messy dark hair and aqua eyes?”

“And a jaw that could cut glass?” Samantha’s eyes twinkle, and I swear I see hearts in her eyes. “If you’re talking about him, then all bets are off. Some things can be sacrificed. Exceptions can be made.”

I roll my eyes. “That isnotStanley. That would be Jace Taggart, my twin brother’s arrogant, pretentious, playboy best friend. Trust me, he’snotboyfriend material.”

“But he’s hookup material, am I right?” Samantha wiggled her brows, a mischievous glint in her eyes.

I start to choke on the fizzy watermelon liquid in my mouth when I hear a familiar baritone, along with a pounding sound from across the hall. “Brynn! Open up. We need to talk.”

I cough, whacking my chest with a fist.

“Speak of the devil.” Charlotte grins like the cat that got the canary as I suck in a lungful of air and jab her in the ribs, while the racket next door continues.
