Emotions where women are concerned aren’t really my thing.

I glance behind me as I dial Teagan’s number, half expecting Brynn to come running down the hall any second and beg me not to go, before I snort at the image because Brynn would rather drown in her own spit than admit she needs my help.

“Yo! Spoke to my mom briefly,” Teagan answers without preamble. “She said Brynn got there okay, but she had to leave you to move her in. Thanks for that, man.”

“Yeah, about that,” I drawl. “Her roommate’s a freak,” I say, eyeing the hot brunette at the front desk. I briefly wonder if she’s a student.

“Fuck. Seriously?” Teagan’s voice brings me back to the matter at hand.

“Seriously.”

“How bad we talking?”

I exhale as I rake a hand through my hair. “I’m talking, Marilyn Manson roadie kind of shit. Quite frankly, I didn’t even talk to the girl, and she scares the crap out of me.”

“Damn.” Teagan sighs. “I know how excited Brynn was to meet her and was really hoping for the best. How did Brynn react?”

“How Brynn always reacts.” I shrug even though he can’t see me. “Her stubborn ass acted like she was bunking with Pollyanna, then sent me on my way.”

“You left her?” he asks, sounding upset, and while I don’t blame him, what the hell does he want me to do about it?

“Yeah, I left her,” I say, hearing my defensive tone. “She practically pushed me out the door. What was I supposed to do? Handcuff myself to the bed?”

Fuck, now there’s a visual.

Head out of gutter, dickhead. She’s your best friend’s sister. Even if she is hot.

“Don’t be so dramatic. I just worry about her. She really wants this to go well. I hate to think she’s off to a bumpy start already. Listen, I don’t wanna get into it, but she . . . went through some stuff in high school. Something other people don’t know about, so she needs this to go well. And I just hate to think something might happen when I’m not around to help her.”

I frown.

I have no idea what he’s talking about, but because I can hear the concern in his voice, and because I’m the best fucking friend in the world, I decide to throw him a bone and ease his suffering. “Listen, no need to worry, okay? I’ll have some people at Hyde Hall keep an eye and ear out for me. If there’s any problems or weird shit with the roommate, or any dudes are hounding her, I’ll be the first to know.”

“You can do that?”

I scoff. “Who do you think you’re talking to? Of course I fucking can.”

Teagan laughs. “Shouldn’t have doubted you for a second. Thanks, man.”

“Any time. Get your shit unpacked and don’t worry about your sister,” I say, knowing today is moving day for him, too.Cumberland University is a Big Ten school, same as AU, so he’ll have his work cut out for him.

I hang up and push off the wall, heading to the front desk, and plaster a charming smile on my face as I approach the hot brunette.

“Can I help you?” she asks.

“Maybe.” I grin and lift my chin. “Tell me your name.”

“Demanding, aren’t we?”

“Always.”

She quirks a brow, but smiles and says, “It’s Andrea.”

“Andrea, give me your number.”

She laughs. “Are you new?”

I lean over the counter, invading her personal space. “How’d you know?”
