“And then what happened the next day?” Charlotte asks.

“Rather than face the awkward I-sucked-my-mortal-enemy’s-and-brother’s-best-friend’s-face-last-night confrontation, I waited until he left to leave the bedroom to emerge. I even missed class.” I grimace. Not the best move, but at least I didn’t have to see Stanley. “Today, I didn’t even have to try. The second I woke up, he was already gone.”

“Nice.” Samantha grins.

“You’re going to have to face him sometime, you know,” Charlotte says, stating the obvious.

“Do I? Because I was thinking I could get through the remaining summer semester hiding away in his room like a hermit and only come out after dark, like a vampire.”

I’m joking.

Not really.

“Whatever. If you ask me, your confession just increased my chances of winning the bet exponentially,” Samantha says, puffing her chest in pride.

Charlotte frowns. “Dammit. I should’ve gone with a week.”

“Guys, come on.” I knew they’d have a field day with this—it’s part of the reason I hadn’t texted them to let them know I’d be staying with Jace—but I didn’t think they’d bethisbad. “Nothing’s happening.”

“You’re right,” Charlotte says, her tone contrite. “I’m sorry. We’ll behave and drop the whole bet thing.” She bites her lip like the effort might kill her.

I turn my gaze on Samantha and she mimes zipping her lips.

“Thank you,” I say, relieved.

“So, really, what are you gonna do when you see him, though? Do you think you’ll bring up the kiss? Clear the air?”

I shake my head, thinking about what I’d decided earlier. “I don’t know. I mean, it’s clear he was trying to get under my skin, to one-up me, and he won. So in my eyes, he has no reason to mention it. So I’ll be damned if I let it get to me,” I say, even though it’s obviously already getting to me or we wouldn’t be having this conversation. “That leaves me with only one recourse. I’m just going to carry on like it’s always been between us and pretend like it never happened.”

“Interesting tactic,” Samantha says, picking up a french fry and popping it in her mouth. “I like it, especially because if it was more than that to him, he’ll eventually crack.”

CHAPTER 14

JACE

Igrip my waterbottle in hand and enter the weight room. Most of the team are already there stretching and I find Chris and Damon near the free weights and join them. We start with hip rolls, moving onto high knees when Damon peers over at me. “I heard you went back to the Psi Delta party after you left and clocked Stanley in the face.”

Chris’s gaze snaps to mine. “You didn’t tell me you went back.”

I frown. “Who told you that?”

“A bunch of the brothers were talking about it.”

“But you didn’t, right?” Chris asks.

My forehead creases as I continue high knees, the air puffing from my lungs like a steam engine. It’s not a lie entirely. I did go back, just not alone. And it wasn’t me that decked him.

“Fuck. You did, didn’t you?” Chris asks, pausing to glare at me while he catches his breath.

“It’s not like that, though. I told Brynn what happened and she wanted to confront him, so I took her.”

“And that’s it . . .?” Damon asks, arching a brow.

I purse my lips as we move onto shrugs, which I freaking hate.

“Awww, come on, dude.” Chris groans.

“What? Brynn punched him, not me, I swear. My fist went nowhere near the dude.”
