Across from me Brynn snorts, and I manage a clipped, “Large will do.”

“Do you like it pink?” She practically purrs.

Fucking hell.

Brynn chokes on her drink, hacking and coughing as she bangs on her chest like a gorilla.

“You all right over there, Cupcake?” I ask with a raised brow.

At her answering nod, I glance back at the waitress who’s intently waiting for my answer, not the least bit fazed by Brynn’s near-death experience. “Uh, well done, thanks.”

Her smile fades as if disappointed at my answer before she takes Brynn’s order in a monotone voice, barely offering her a second glance. Afterward, she leaves to place our orders, and when Brynn turns to me, I can’t tell if she’s impressed, mortified, or both. “Wow,” she says, eyes wide.

“What?” I shrug like I have no idea what she’s talking about.

“Does that happen to you everywhere you go?”

“Not everywhere,” I mumble with a shrug.

“Must be nice to have women falling at your feet and propositioning you all the time.”

“She wasn’t propositioning me.” I ignore her scoff and cock my head, giving her a meaningful look. “Like you don’t have dudes doing the same.”

She laughs. “Do you think if I did, I’d still be single?”

I roll my eyes. “You’re single because you don’t put yourself out there.”

“No way.” She shakes her head.

“Seriously. I could name about five guys on my team that have asked me about you, and would take you out in a heartbeat had I not threatened them bodily harm.”

Oops. Did I say that out loud?

I wince, afraid of how she’ll take this.

“Wait, seriously?”

I’m not going to lie to her, so I simply shrug.

Surprising me, she laughs and takes a sip of her soda. “Figures.”

A few minutes later when our food comes, Brynn eyes my meat kabobs and veggies with growing interest. “What?” I ask.

“Nothing. Just . . . have you always eaten so clean? I don’t remember you being so strict with your diet back home. In fact, I recall the time my mother made a double batch of homemade bread and you ate two loaves of it in two hours. I was so mad because I didn’t even get a piece.

My lips quirk. “You fat shaming me?”

“I would never,” she says in mock offense. “But I’m genuinely curious.”

Brynn being curious about me is something I can get used to.

“First of all,” I say, taking a moment to shovel a forkful of vegetables in my mouth and chew, “your mom’s bread is fucking amazing.” Brynn snorts at this. “Second of all, you haven’t noticed me being so strict before because I’m not. I mean, it’s true, I have been watching what I eat a little more since starting conditioning because I want to be at my prime, and the extra protein is making a difference in the gym.” I note the way her gaze flickers to my biceps and then my chest, and the attention gets me hot. “But mostly, I’m playing a joke on Chris.”

Her gaze lifts to mine. “What?”

“Yeah.” I smile as I explain, “He has a killer sweet tooth, so me and the guys thought it would be funny if we convinced him the team requires a restrictive high-protein diet during conditioning. He’s been eating nothing but lean meat, protein shakes, and vegetables at every meal.” Jace laughs. “Meanwhile, I have a stash of chocolate hiding in my can of super greens inthe pantry, and based on the way he devoured your cupcakes like he was starving, I’d say he’s more than a little desperate.”

Brynn covers a laugh. “No. That’s so mean!”
