“What? That they hate each other?”

“No. That this is your favorite movie, and yet, the romance between the two main characters starts as them hating each other and being enemies until it slowly turns to more.”

“Why is that . . .?”

Her words trail off as she glances at me, and I smirk.

She swallows, then mumbles something under her breath I can’t hear and goes back to watching the movie. When Marc Darcy shows up at her apartment after Bridget’s pivotal speech, I sense this is the ending.

“What are you doing here?” Bridget asks, and I roll my eyes.

Isn’t it obvious?

When she goes to change into her sexy underwear, I scoff. “What? So, they haven’t even really dated and now suddenly, they’re going to get it on?”

“Are you really slut-shaming fictional characters?” she asks, her tone incredulous.

I shrug. “Just seems a little fast to me.”

Brynn chuckles and shakes her head.

But when we get to the part where Bridget chases Darcy out into the snow in only her underwear while “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” blasts in the background, I scoff and roll my eyes. “Comeon.”

“What now?” Brynn asks with a hint of irritation in her voice.

“No way she would do that. She would totally grab some pants first.”

Brynn laughs and chucks a piece of popcorn at me. “She’s in love and going after him because she thinks he’s leaving.”

“He’s not?”

“No.”

I groan.

“It’s a romantic comedy. Did you really think it was gonna end with him reading the mean things she wrote about him in her diary, then leave. The End?”

I shrug. “Maybe,” I say as I wonder if Brynn has a diary, because if she does, I’d like a peek.

Turns out Brynn was right and Marc Darcy, the amazing man that he is, was simply just popping across the street to buy her a new diary. After a rather cinematic kiss in the snow, they pullapart and Bridget says, “Wait a minute, good guys don’t kiss like that.”

And Marc fucking Darcy, the clever bastard that he is, answers, “Oh, yes they fucking do.” They go back to kissing, and I hold my breath. Beside me, Brynn watches with a dreamy expression.

But I can’t do it. I can’t hold it in any longer, and I burst out laughing.

“Excuse me. That is a spectacular ending,” she says, pushing her shoulders back, her expression one of quiet indignance.

“Whatever you say.”

“You didn’t like it?” she asks.

I shrug, letting her think I didn’t because, even though parts of it were cheesy as hell, it was pretty funny and I kind of dug it. But most of all, I loved it because she did.

The credits roll and my smile fades, disappointed it’s over already as I’m nowhere near ready for bed. Brynn’s presence somehow has me wired, like I’ve downed several shots of espresso in a single sitting, and I know there’s no way in hell I’m falling asleep anytime soon.

When she makes no move to retreat, I take it as a sign maybe she feels the same way. Maybe she’s not ready for the evening to end either, so I take this as the green light to engage her in some conversation. “You seem to be getting pretty close to the girls,” I say, thinking how weird it is I’m trying to strike up a conversation with Brynn that doesn’t involve pissing her off.

“Yeah. Honestly, they’re pretty great. My roommate might’ve been a dud, but in a weird way, I’m grateful I got placed where I did because, otherwise, I might not have met them. What about you? You seem to like Chris, but you haven’t said a whole lot about the rest of your teammates?”
