“We’re almost to the ranch,” Adrian added.

“The ranch?”

“It’s where his mom’s bed and breakfast is,” Gabby explained.

“Is that where the wedding will be?” Adelie asked.

Gabby rotated in her seat so she could see us more directly. She was pretty on a regular day, but the lovestruck gleam in her eyes made her glow. Her blonde hair had more of a golden shade to it than Addie’s platinum.

“We’re getting married in the woods. By his cabin where we first met.”

“Dude,” Hawk said in admiration. “Sounds amazing.”

“It will be.”

“You two ready to tie the knot?” Hawk asked.

Gabby beamed at Adrian, who smiled back at her and reached for her hand. “So ready,” she said.

Montana was flat; its fields were golden, green, or recently harvested. We passed through a tiny town called Two Pines that had a stoplight, a gas station, and a grocery store.

On the outskirts, we passed more fields and then took a dirt road toward a pair of houses, a large brown barn, and an impeccable log structure that was too big to be called a cabin.

After retrieving our things from the back hatch, Hawkhanded Addie and me our bags and then paused to gape at the house.

“It looks exactly the same as it did the last time I was here,” he said. “Are you sure you’ve been that busy?”

“Ha ha,” Adrian said, falling into step beside his friend.

“Are any of the others here yet?” Hawk asked.

“Several,” Adrian said, mentioning a few names I didn’t recognize.

I wondered who they were. Friends from college? Or had these two grown up together?

I stopped the questions in their tracks. I didnotcare.

I didn’t want to know any more about him.

The parking lot was packed tightly with cars and pickups. I hefted my suitcase and followed the others toward the log house’s generous wooden porch and into a quaint reception area.

It smelled like newly cleaned carpets. Beyond the reception desk was a large dining and seating area. Everything was accentuated with rustic, country décor—wood finishings, antler chandeliers, and all. Even the tall chimney sweeping up to the second-story level felt country.

“You have rooms up here.” Adrian carried Adelie’s and my bags up the stairs, and Hawk and I followed. Hawk was shown to the first door.

He smirked at me before stepping inside.

“And you girls are here,” Gabby said.

Gabby showed us the next room. It had another gaudy antler chandelier and a queen-sized bed with bear accents on the bedding and curtains.

My stomach gave another little annoying flip at the thought that we’d be so close to Hawk. Was he really going to make good on that promise of his?

What was he going to do?

I shivered at the prospect and dreaded it at once. That was all I needed, to have a fling during this trip with the attractive owner of the company that my stepmother’s company worked for.

I wasn’t technically his employee—it was worse than that. I was part of Malus Custodial Management who cleaned the offices, bathrooms, and every crevice of every floor of Ever After Sweet Shoppe’s corporate building.
