I sifted through. “My family life has been hard.”

“Because your mom is gone? When did she die?”

He remembered. Oh, my goodness, heremembered.

“She passed away ten years ago, when I was fifteen. My dad got remarried?—”

“Hence the stepsister.”

“Two, actually.”

“And Stina Malus?”

“She’s evil.”

He laughed.

I went on. “In fact, that’s one reason Pris attacked me tonight. It was an attempt to get me to go home so I’d work on the job Stina wanted me to take tonight.”

“That’s what you meant when you said you had to work Christmas.”

“She wanted me to clean some apartments tonight. I told her no, and she threatened that I would lose my job?—”

“Brutal. I can see why trust is hard for you.”

“So I gave my two weeks’ notice.”

Hawk licked his bottom lip. “I’m impressed. So—what did you say her name was? Pris?”

I nodded. “It’s short for Priscilla.”

“She came here to give you grief for that?”

“She said other things, too,” I said, squirming just a little inside.

I wasn’t sure if I should bring it up or not, but Hawk was holding me so closely, listening so intently. And I was curious.

“About you,” I said.

“Me? I’ve never met her before tonight.”

“That’s what I figured. That’s why I’m so confused.”

“About what?”

I gripped his shoulder, feeling the firm muscle there.

“She said…she said a relationship with you isn’t possible because of something you signed in college. That I was gearing up to get hurt. It made no sense to me.”

Hawk sniffed. His hands around me went rigid.

“What did you say her name was?”

“Pris? Well, it’s Priscilla Malus. You’ve never met her before?”

Frowning, he shook his head. “I would have remembered a she-wolf like her.”

“Do you know what she was talking about?”
