His expression shifted to something heated and unruly. “Hasn’t happened yet.”

I tensed in the best way. An anticipatory way.

“Is it something you’ve been wishing for?” I asked.

His attention focused on my lips. “I didn’t realize how much until this moment.”

I put my hand on his chest. “I’ve been wondering when you were going to go for it.”

“Are you inviting me to kiss you?” he asked.

My mouth went dry. His office, the tree, the floor—it all faded.

“Do you need me to?”

He lured me closer. His breath was warm on my skin, making my lashes flutter.

“I’ve never asked a woman before I kiss her. I figured, since you claim you’re no thief, I thought I’d prove I wasn’t one either.”

I pressed my chest against his. “If you want to kiss me, Hawk, you won’t have to steal one.”

His pupils dilated. “So you are inviting me to kiss you.”

Feeling bold, I tilted my chin upward.

His lips pressed to mine then. The kiss swirled like a snowstorm, blinding, diverting, causing me to slow and pay more attention to the eddy of disorientation and the rage of desire pulsing inside of me.

His mouth coerced mine, parting my lips, deepening, taking.

His hands scaled my ribs, to my throat, my hair. I wanted to stay just like this, warm andsafe with him. He was flickering fires, cozy afternoons, and hot cocoa. He was the refuge and the storm.

One arm tightened around me while the other slid beneath my legs. Without warning, he stood.

Keeping me in his arms, with hazy desire in his eyes, he carried me across the office and back to the room I’d changed in.

Without a word, he set me onto the futon and resumed where we’d left off. His hands cradled my face. His body was firm and strong, and his lips reclaimed mine.

I grasped the need for the relocation. We had more room in here, and it was more comfortable as well.

A little too comfortable.

“I just had a thought,” he said after a long, delicious caress.

He stroked his thumb along my cheek and stared at my mouth. His lips were swollen, and his eyes were half closed.

“I think I’m having more than one,” I said with bated breath.

He was going to consume me if I wasn’t careful.

“Remember the project I mentioned?” he said against my mouth. “I’m setting up a candy shop for the kids in a few hours, and I’m a little short-handed. Come help me.”

He cradled my face, pleading with more than just words. I saw it in the gleam of his blue eyes.

He wanted me. He wanted to be with me. To have my help.

I struggled forming a coherent thought, especially when he dipped in for another kiss.

I was going to the hospital tomorrow anyway. I could do it. After this? I wanted as much time with him as I could get.
