I was rattled, and he was the ideal distraction right now.

“There you are,” he said as I approached. “I was afraid you’d left before I could give you this.”

Then his brow furrowed as he caught something in my expression. “Are you okay?”

Pushing away the bitter aftertaste from Stina’s tone, and the ridiculous quaking trembling through me, I took the gift.

“I’m fine. And sorry, I didn’t get you anything.”

As I took the gift, he captured my hand and pulled me close enough for me to breathe him in. His warm voice dripped down my skin like melted honey.

“Ella. What’s wrong? Is it your stepsister? Did she do something again?”

I met his gaze. Of all the emotions he could display there, fear flickered in his eyes. What did he have to be afraid of?

“Why do you think she would?” I asked.

He peered around and gestured to the nurses. Then luring me out of the waiting room again, it wasn’t for romance as it’d been before.

He led me to an empty place in the hall.

“Ella, do I need to be worried for your safety?”

“What? Hawk, no.”

“Do I?” The question was adamant.

His muscular shoulders were tense. His body reflected heat and protective vibes that did him all kinds of favors. I didn’t doubt if it came down to it, this man could protect his lady.

“I just talked to Stina. I just quit my job.”

The tension didn’t leave his body. If anything, his concern increased.

“You’re not scared of her, are you?”

I didn’t get this tension from him. Stina was the dark side of nasty, but aside from emotional attacks, I didn’t fear for my personal safety.

“Why do you ask that?” I said.

“You just seem so put-off. You’ve been this strong, confident, put together woman since we met, and something about you seems off. You’re not acting like yourself.”

“Hawk.” I placed a hand on his chest, thrilling at the hardness there and the feel of his pulse beneath my palm. “I’m fine. Stina always rattles me, that’s all. Why are you so worried?”

He rubbed his neck. The side of his throat worked through a swallow. “I didn’t tell you everything last night.”

“About what?”

“Your stepsister Pris—she said something to you that I don’t like.”

“She does that to me on a regularbasis.”

He missed the humor in my tone. “She implied I wasn’t allowed to be with you.”

My heart caught. His gaze had hardened, and he glanced away. I shifted to meet it once more.

“You mean your Pact? Or something else? Don’t tell me you’re in another relationship or something.”

One of the nurses passed us, pushing a wheeled cart in front of her. When his eyes met mine again, they brimmed with conflict.
