But they were right; we couldn’t act on speculation alone, and that was all we had.

Speculation.

Maddox brushed a hand across his jaw. He sank onto the chair beside Duncan.

I attempted to lead them back to my viewpoint.

“Pris said something to Ella about staying away from me, about me not being able to date her or anyone else. That’s The Pact. Will was the only one who had such a royal problem with making us stick to our words.”

“Are you so sure about that?” Maddox asked. “It could have been anyone. Any of the guys might feel bitter that you and Adrian are dating and falling in love while the rest of us are keeping our words.”

“Speak for yourself,” Duncan muttered so quietly I nearly missed it.

My eyebrow raised.

Did that mean he had fallen in love, too?

I turned to Ethan. “Would you call the police?”

We hadn’t yet done so, but now that there was significant evidence against Pris rather than Ella, I wouldn’t hesitate any longer.

“Maybe he’s let The Pact go,” Maddox said as Ethan strode to the other end of the room. “This could be an entirely unrelated incident that just looks completely suspicious.”

“Iwish I knew,” I said.

My phone buzzed before I could think it through. I hurried to answer.

“Hey, Clary. What’s up? Did you get Eudora Wilson’s info?”

“I did, but that’s not why I’m calling. There’s a woman who wants to talk to you. She’s waiting in my office.”

“Not now, Clary,” I said, meeting Ella’s eye and then Maddox’s and Duncan’s. This was too important to walk out on if it wasn’t about Eudora. “We’ve just had a breakthrough.”

“Sir.” Clary’s voice was insistent. “I think you’ll want to hear what she has to say.”

I’d always relied on Clary’s intuition. Did she know who this woman was or what she wanted?

“Okay,” I said. “I’ll be right there.”

I lowered my phone.

“Sounds like there’s something I need to take care of,” I said, glancing to the rest of them.

“Don’t discount The Pact. It’d be good to disband it completely so we can be done getting threatening messages or living with it hanging over our heads. You may not love anyone right now, but you never know when she’ll walk into the same elevator you’re on.”

I winked at Ella. Her gaze turned sultry.

“I don’t want to know,” Duncan muttered, shaking his head.

“Sir,” Ethan said. His hand rested to the side of my laptop as he lifted his gaze to mine. “I think you should tell the rest of the staff so that people feel safe at work. If I may suggest,it might also be time to find a new custodial service. One without such terrible management.”

I was halfway to the door. “Thanks, Ethan. I think you’re right.”

With that thought in mind, I returned to my phone. I hadn’t yet ended the call.

“Clary, you still there?”

“I am, sir,” she replied.
