All I could do was ask, though I decided not to let her know that I already knew Pris was meeting with someone else who was also involved in this.

I returned to my seat across from her.

“You said you overheard something else. That someone else was involved. Do you know who?”

“I don’t,” she said shakily. “I didn’t catch a name. Just that this person has some kind of issue with you and so encouraged Pris to take action and offered her something in return for it, though I don’t know what.”

It had to be Will.

How, though? He was in jail.

How could he have acquired this much money? If he had access to those kinds of funds, wouldn’t he use them to pay his bail? Then again, considering the violent nature of his crime, he may not have been offered bail at all.

All questions aside, there was a chance it wasn’t Will behind this at all. Was it someone else?

Whatever the case, we had to stop this.

I stepped toward her and offered a hand. Tentatively, she slid her hand into mine, and I pulled her to her feet.

“You did the right thing. It will be okay. I think you should know, I have to tell the police this information. I can’t let this slide, not when, as you said, my company’s reputationis on the line. And Pris and Stina need to know they can’t get away with this kind of criminal action.”

She stared at a distant spot on the floor. “I understand. I knew you would. I knew what I was doing, but I had to tell you.”

“I’m glad you did.” I gave her hand a soothing grip before releasing it. “If you’re worried about your safety…”

Charlotte shook her head. “I’ll be fine. Just do what you have to, Mr. Danielson.”

“Thank you,” I said, walking her to the door.

I opened it for her and didn’t allow myself to completely process everything until she’d gone.

The minute I closed the door behind me, I sagged against the wall and let my head fall back. I stared up at the ceiling, swimming in waves of gratitude.

This was it. Ella was innocent.

Now, I had to get back to the others and tell them what I’d discovered.

Sittingin the office with Hawk’s friends was, in a word, awkward. I wished I’d brought Adelie with me just so I’d have someone to talk to.

Duncan reminded me of a wolf. His dark hair hung low over his eyes, and he brooded around the shelves I’d dusted countless times, scowling at the items there as though he could detect flecks I’d missed.

Maddox was the livelier of the two. He sank onto the seat across from me and fidgeted, tapping his fingertips together.

I checked my phone a few times and was relieved to find a text from Addie.

She was probably worried after the dramatic way Hawk had swooped in like the hero of a story and taken me with him.

I still fluttered over our moment andconfessions in the car.

Addie: Everything okay?

Me: I think so. Hawk said he found evidence supporting that I didn’t do it.

Addie: That’s a relief.
